Note the burned coil. Some of the coils on the crossover from No. 04771089 are underdimensioned (too thin wire). They will run too hot when listening to high volume for longer time. The older crossovers are more robust.

Thank you very much Bo! You're a great help

Andreasi995:I have search for new midrange drivers on ebay. I found old refoamed midrange drivers.
I found old refoamed midrange drivers.
Probably someone from the US who's asking outrageous prices?
Don't you have those drivers anymore?
Andreasi995:Is it difficult to open the beolab penta receiver to clean it for exampel from dust?
from dust?
I did it and they are perfectly clean now!
What's a Beolab 9? Not interesting for me
Refoaming is not so hard to do, check youtube..
Good day Penta Lovers!
A customer of ours told us their's a thread about the quality of our surrounds for the Penta midranges, and after going through it, we like to respond, which is what we do now.
First of all, in this thread there seem to be some people who have bought our foam surrounds for the Penta an now claim the quality of those is not good enough, and that's why they're not able to use the surrounds. That's fine with us, fair enough, but we just wonder why these people have not contacted us to tell us about their problems. We invite these customers to contact us with their complaints so we can (try to) solve the problems. Our philosophy is not so much to talk about each other to solve the problem, but to talk with each other to solve the problems.
OK, back to the surround(s) now.
An issue with the foam surrounds we have on offer is the outer size of the foam surround is very tight. That's true. Before we had a bigger outer surround size, but we received complaints from customers the centering of the voice coil was pretty difficult (the surrounds not fitting the frame on one side), hence we cut it by 1.5 mm. This is 0,75 mm left and 0,75 mm on the right...
Another issue is the angle of the foam surround's inner flip. This is a more legitimate one. Our surround has the same angle as the original surround, but the original surround was mounted on the cone before the speaker was assembled. You all have to glue the inner flip while the unit is assembled - a much more challenging job. The fact that the spider has lost some of its stiffness - making the speaker cone 'sink' a bit if you put the unit on its back makes things more challenging. FYI - we have a pair of Pentas ourselves, we picked those up with bad surrounds, and have restored those - using our own surrounds of course. Maybe it's our experience with refoams that made the job easy, but we did not experience any major problems. So seem some of the people on this forum who have (a lot of) experience on refoaming.
Then there seems to be some discussion on using foam or rubber surrounds. In general, we recommend foam, but sometimes rubber is just better. Imagine a pair of Pentas used near the coast (salty air), a pair of Pentas in a holliday cottage (extreme temperatures), a pair of penta's in tropics in a house with Air Conditioning blowint the whole day (yes, these exist...) etc etc. In some cases, rubber is just the best thing for your personal situation, unless you want to refoam on e very regular basis.
Finally we would like to say something about buying new units from B&O, if available. If you do so, please realise these units were not produced yesterday. Also not a week ago, a motnh ago, a year ao, two years ago, but years and years and years ago. Of course, shelving these units in a box will slow down the process of the foam surround deteriorating, but it's still there (the process). Usually, from our experience, new units do not last 10-15years. Much less.
Well, this is just our two cents. Do wih this information whatever you want, and if you have any thoughts - do not hesitate to contact us, preferably by e-mail. This forum is so big there's no way we can check the messages on a daily or even weekly basis.
Good Hifi
As you might know I bought many foam rings from you (GoodHifi) mainly Penta's, CX100's and even bigger sizes as for the M150's. Penta foamrings could be slightly bigger for the outer size but speaking for myself, and I did many of them, never had any issues fitting them on the midrange drivers. I sold many Penta's and never had any complaints from my "customers". I'm happy doing business with you....
I've refoamed a number of speakers (more then 100 individual drivers). Among them six pair of Penta, five of them with foam rings from Good Hifi. Based on my experience I'm confident to say that the foam rings from Good Hifi would benefit from a larger outer diameter. I'd say 3 mm increase of the outer diameter (1.5 mm on the radius).
As it is now the size makes the job unnecessary difficult. The angle of the inner flap is not an issue.
For those interested, we have published a video instruction on the refoam of Penta midranges on YouTube. Because we uaasume a link tou our shop is not allowed we will guide you to Youtube:
The video does not use the shimming method. A video with that one is pending.

OK, so an iframe is not allowed here, another try, a good old web 1.0 hyperlink to youtube....

As promised there are new proper fitted rings available.
No offence Goodhifi, you do deliver proper rings for many drivers, but to my opinion not for the penta mids.
I do remember contacting you about the incorrect size. But the rings I got were the best you could deliver at that time.
I needed a long term solution. I regulary get penta's for overhauling and/or upgrading, and even with so called refoamed units.
But the results with these refoamed units are in my opinion a short term solution.

Your picture shows one of the worst samples I've ever seen. Looks the one who did this has started with the outer ring first and made a bad attempt or not even took the effort to finish it.
At the above showed picture are the rings not glued. The above showed picture shows the correct diameter from the inner and outer rings and angle towards the conus.
At the dutch section there's a picture with a worse done refoaming job.

Can anyone tell me if the Mk3 sound different. I've noticed, that the MK 3 uses a different tweeter than older Pentas. The dome is made of textil.
Thank you very much in advance.
Regars Chris
Can anyone comment on this topic?
I have a pair of Beolab Mk3 Pentas. Some penta lovers claim, their sound is veilled.
I have the ones with the textile seas tweeter. The sound is absolutely not veilled, it's precise, clear and excellent for voices.
Is it possible, that B&O has updated the crossover and changed the sound of the pentas in the late ninetees or early 2000?
Thanks a lot.
Regards Chris

"You think we can slap some oak on this thing?"
So, do the mk3 have a different sound?
They do use a different tweeter and have a completly differernt crossover. Has anyone ever made a comparison between a pair of Pentas from 1988 and 2000?
