Hi,
I bought a Beogram 5000 turntable for my Beosystem. Turntable is without MMC cartridge, I am waiting for a new one. And here the question: when turned on and press play , the turntable makes a turn and turns off and the lamp goes out. Is this normal behavior without MMC or is it a sign of failure and I can check or repair something before I get the cartridge ??
BeO is like a good wine - the older the better...
That's good news. It is in good condition, without scratches and visual damage. Flap fully functional, plate like new, I have to do clean cosmetics. And due to the lack of MMC and "damage", the turntable was almost free.
Could also be, that you attempt to start the Beogram without a record on the platter.

Is there a weight that recognizes the record on the platter?? Because the arm does not move when it turn.
Yes.And it senses record size by weight too.
It will not move the arm, if there is no record on the platter. It will only spin the platter a few revolutions and then stop (and theremay be a faint scraping noise associated, this is all normal). The "TURN" button is used for record wiping - it will spin the platter only for as long as you hold the button, it will not start aplay sequence. For that you will have to use the "PLAY" button.
The above is also one reason why you must never use antistatic mats on Beograms (there are others reasons too).
Thanks ,
Yes, everything is as you wrote. I hear a bit of scraping noise at the same time
One more question.
To make sure that my Beogram 5000 is fully operational and not to generate expenses, I bought a fully refurbished MMC4 from "Needlestein" (Cartridge_Retipping@outlook.com, Joseph).
Does anyone have any personal experience with his products ?? I read opinions about it on audiophile portals and all are positive and even excellent. The descriptions show that he brings back to life everything that has a needle and uses vinyl.
and description of my purchase:
"Bang & Olufsen MMC4 retarded with as original bonded .0003 x .0007 elliptical diamond tip set into original hardened tapered cylindrical aluminum alloy cantilever.
This cartridge has been released, expertly cleaned, adjusted, recantilevered, tuned, bench-tested, and play tested. See photos. This is the actual item you will receive.
Bonded precision ground diamond sourced from high quality Swiss production. Suspension behaves as it should, output is excellent and even Fozgometer readings.
I check all my cartridges thoroughly after retransmission of Era III, CBS STR-100, Hi Fi News and Cardas. This cartridge passes with flying colors. Channel balance verified with Fozgometer and Analog Productions. Ultimate LP Test Disc.
6 Month Warranty on retip.. I ship internationally and offer money-back guarantee. I stand behind my retipped cartridges. "
Yes, Yes, Yes.. .
Finally, a package from Joseph. My MMC4 after renovation ... a quick photo on the first vinyl victim.
After setting the cartridge, should I adjust the counterweight ??
I know, it's forum, no blog but
Everything is as you described, Beocogram fully functional. These noises and stops are the result of a shortage of cartridge and disc, after completing in the above everything works.
I put the MMC on tone arm and followed the instructions from soundsmith
https://www.sound-smith.com/how-balance-your-bo-tone-arm-and-set-proper-tracking-force
and after that... WOW, big WOW !!! it's so clean, so nice, with such fullness of sounds. I thought that after listening to the M70, nothing will surprise me in this Beosystem ... but the sound from the vinyl in this set... WOW
For you it may be the norm, I was born and grew up in the communism era. The playing equipment that my parents had at home was of the same quality as the system in which it was made and the records were generally of poor quality in the form of postcards. I did not understand how you can enjoy a piece of black plastic when you can listen to the sound with digital quality. What a fool and ignoramus I was. I thought it was just that, you buy vinyls because it's on top now. You know "retro rules !! " . I bought Beosystem 5000, I wanted to have a set so I bought the M70 too. I got to know what is warm music in the full spectrum but I still lived in the blissful unconscious that there could be something more. Something to add wings to this set. I did not know that there are sounds that are even more fun than now. It is Beogram with MMC in perfect condition.
