My Beocenter 7700 plays very nice through my Beovox S45-2 speakers (4 speakers) for about 1 hour when it starts to distort the sound. Are 4 speakers too many? Do I need another amp to drive the speakers? The Beocenter gets quite hot on the back after a while.

Starts to distort and gets hot? Probably the no-load current is off, or there are electrolytic capacitors going bad.
Replacing the electrolytic capacitors will help your beocenter sound as new.
Adjust the no load current as per the service manual, probably a good thing to replace the potentiometers for the no load current as these often go bad in B&O devices this age.
