I bought a preowned bv 8-40. It seems like it is configured to work with beo4 joystick version since I can use the arrow keys on my non-joystick version. Can I reset the TV some way to change this setting?

No reset needed.
Just call up the menu and navigate using the numbers - means 1 for the first, 2 for the second.
Don’t forget to accept with Go.

Oh, of course I should have added, that you will have to navigate this way to the Beo4 setup item...
.....where you can change the behaviour of controlling from with to without navi.
