Hi, I have just bought a new A1, soft buttons do not work. On/off button works only to turn it on, but I cannot turn it off. Likewise, volume buttons, bluetooth buttons do not work as well.

I can only connect and play via the Beoplay app, but since buttons are not working, only way to connect and control is the official app.

I tried to re-update again via the usb cable and pc app, but it didn't work.

It's really frustrating, somebody has the same issue or any idea?

This guy has the same problem:

Was it brand new or a refurb unit? If it's defective and new, simply return it.

I have had a same or similar issue. Some correspondence with BeoPlay helpdesk did not help and I swapped it for another one at the shop.

That one is still working fine.

Good luck!

I have the same problem, and I don¨t have the reciept. I think its because it's in retail mode https://www.beoplay.com/~/media/Relation_spots/Partner/How-to-update-to-retail-mode-for-A1-A2-Active-Beolit-17-and-P2-vers-3.pdf?la=en

But because I cant shut it off, I cant fix it.

Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to Beoworld.

Just wondering how it got into ‘retail mode’?

If you did it yourself, you should know how to reverse it.

If not - have a look here:

https://www.beoplay.com/~/media/relation_spots/partner/instructions-on-how-to-reverse-retail-mode.pdf?la=en

But please tell us about your use and experience with the ‘retail mode’, how did you use it?

Retail sounds like shop demo mode?

I am having this issue as well. I'm not sure if it's in Retail Mode -- I'm not sure why it would be as it has worked fine up until last night. Anyways, attempting to take it out of Retail Mode did nothing.  I'm stuck... I tried connecting via the app doing the volume trick by holding the + for 10 seconds, then simultaneously holding the - button to reset but nothing. It seems like my unit bricked itself.

Yep. We have one that will not switch off. Not had a look at it yet to investigate further.

I believe the unit is past warranty. At this point, is it worth taking in to a B&O store?

I have a reply from Marco at B&O in case it helps anyone on here:

"Since the unit seems unresponsive and won't turn off, we recommend that you let the battery drain and then proceed with a Hard-Reset:
- Hard-Reset: Hold the Power button and connect the USB cable (connected to power) to the unit while holding the button."

I wasn't aware of this hard-reset function. I'm still waiting for my battery to fully drain to the point where if I press the power button the unit does not power on until I try this and will post back if it fixes the issue.

I performed the hard reset and let the unit fully charge but it’s still exhibiting the same issues. Again, the issues are:

Buttons do not function with the exception that I am able to power on the unit. I’m unable to power off the unit and pressing the Bluetooth button does nothing so I cannot pair the device.

Update: We tried connecting the A1 to a friend's Android phone and he was not able to pair. The unit seems to be bricked.

Guys, I had exactly the same problem, but after a few hours of experimenting, I have found a solution that did work for me. The process was as follows:

  1. If you have the Bang & Olufsen application on your mobile device, remove the device from the list. If not, install the App, you will use it later.
  2. Connect the A1 to the power source
  3. Hold the power button for 25 seconds, along with the Bluetooth button, until the white light goes off (this works even if the device does not want to turn off as happened to me). Do not release at this point, wait for approx. another 5 seconds then release both.
  4. Press again briefly the power button (without the Bluetooth button now) to turn-on, and you should hear the classic turning-on tone
  5. Install/Open the Bang & Olufsen application. Register or log-in. Add the new A1 product and wait for the prompt to go to Bluetooth settings of the phone. At this point application itself induced the blue pairing light on the speaker, I did not press anything. The A1 suddenly appeared on the Bluetooth list and allowed me to pair.
  6. Voila, the music was playing again as usual!

Now, it needs to be said that the speaker still does not behave properly. Whenever I need to turn it off, I still need to press the power button for 25 seconds. Sometimes, it goes on automatically, don't know why - BUT it works and allows me to play my music, so it is better than nothing.

Let me know if it works for you!

I have two units of the Beoplay A1 one and both had these problems. I've used the following steps to get the buttons working again which were mentioned in the comments of the following youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74g1uc9aqnw

First method: Press and hold the volume+ button for 10 seconds then keep the button pressed and additional press and hold the volume- button until the light starts flashing red or green

Second method: Plugin in the USB cable. Push the power button and keep the button pressed. Remove and immediately reconnect the USB cable, then flash the firmware onto the device. Using this method I was able to get the buttons working again.

Another thing I've tried was to remove the battery (you need a T10 screwdriver to open the device and disconnect the battery), then press and hold the power on button and plugging in the USB cable. The LEDs were flashing green but it didn't help with the problem that the buttons weren't working.

Hi,

At first I have to tell, that I am a big B&O Fan and use several units since about 30 Years. Whithout complications.

I've tried every known method for my A1 with the same issue. Icluding the Hard Reset. Nothing worked.

I sent it to B&O for repair. They tested and returned it as functional, but after 3-5 minutes the same issue occurred. On a new attempt they told me, they are sorry, but the warranty has expired for 4 weeks and so they couldn't do anything for me instead of offering a new A1 with 20% off the regular price.

I bought a new one on an Black Friday for much less, but this one got actually a problem with the Bass Speaker.

Now I wait for the Test Result of B&O and I'm shure, this was the last A1 for me.

Hello

I have the same problem with the buttons is no working from beoplay(1gen)

They give me on warrenty a new one beosound (2e gen), okay thats okay but!

I have sold 2 beoplay's for strereo and thats a good sound, but now with the one of the 2 gen. is stereo not possible.

Than I making contact and there no solution for this, and I must going too the store where I buy the first old one thats still working.

B&o give me another product back with other

characteristics and my stereo is not working anymore, thats the reason I buy 2 beoplays.

That's not good from B&O and i'm don't agree with this.

Hey there,

I do have the same issue here with this box. It started some months after I bought the Beoplay A1 back then in 2017. Not only that the buttons didn't react from time to time. The box suddenly started Siri on my wife's iphone (and friends who have been here and wanted to connect to the box)

We also received the "reset advice". Nothing helped. It became even worse. Now I cant even turn on the box anymore. It does know turn itself on out of nowhere. In the middle of the night. and it stays on until the battery is empty. Repairing is not possible. And I don't want to buy a refurbished product. I want my product to do it's job.

We published a review (in german) on our music magazine to make this case more popular on burning-music.de

It's like the current problem with Nintendo and their joi controllers. They know about this issue but they're not gonna do anything about it. Instead they released the 2nd Gen version (maybe this one works better now). But everyone with the 1st Gen box has a problem now. Shame on B&O!

Hi

I seem to have same issue as many of you: A1 buttons unresponsive. I can switch on, but not switch off, change volume, connect bluetooth etc. Funnily enough if I connect A1 to laptop with USB, laptop recognizes the speaker and allows me to play. All controls however, are not working still

I noticed you above post from a year ago. I have a question about that: First method seems to work. but, what do I do after that (ie red light is flashing, now what?)

PS second method has no impact

Thanks for letting me know
