Hi all - i'm looking forward to getting a Beosound 4 later in the week as a replacement for my trusty old BC9000 that bit the dust. I have bought the DAB model so do i need a specific aerial for this or will a standard aerial pick up the DAB stations? And will any old standard SD card work in the reader?

Sorry if they are silly questions - first DAB radio i'll have owned!

1. Standard FM aerial, assuming you are living in a DAB-serviced region.

2. 2 GB SD card max.

There is a work around for larger SD cards involving a software upgrade, but I have not added this, as I also use the same SD cards to play in our Beosound 3 radios. We can use the same cards in both devices, and carry them anywhere in the world we have B&O equipment, in a zippered SD card wallet.

This is a good radio/CD/SD player, which will connect to a computer for N.RADIO music sources. Our use is primarily N.RADIO and SD card music: Rarely if ever used for local radio or CD.

If you are buying the BS4 brand new from B&O then you should find two aerials packed inside the box:

  • 1 x FM aerial
  • 1 x DAB aerial

Thanks chaps - it was a used product so only a power cable included but got it for what i think is a fantastic price. Not sure if its had the software upgrade so looks like a 2 GB SD card it is - i'm sure i can pack a good number of albums on it.

You may have to source some connectors for the aerials - get a download of the manuals from B&O so you can read up on the installation

You can indeed place a large number of music albums on a 2GB SD card.

If you don't already have a remote control, I would suggest an inexpensive Beo 4 for your usage. It will greatly extend your use of your new Beosound 4 operation. At times that is all I use for weeks (including Home Theatre sound via the selection of A.AUX), unless I want to change an SD card.

Between the same music album on CD, N.Music, or an SD card, I prefer the SD card sound. And again, you can take the same sound with you to enjoy with a Beosound 3.

I sincerely hope you find a good DAB aerial, and enjoy your DAB FM !

Thanks for the replies - luckily a Beo4 was included in the price so i should be fine. Downloading my albums onto the SD card is the key job really but looking forward to making a good compilation of albums from my collection.

Strangely so do I -- I say strangely because the music was originally captured using Beoplayer*, Beoport and Beosound 2 -- which means in theory the sound is compromised compared to the source CD, and yet it seems richer when I play the same track off the SD.

( * I can't remember if this was circa my windows era, versus using iTunes )

What I do like, is that the Beosound 4 displays the track, artist / album names from the directory structure on the SD card.

Dave;

Loading your music albums onto the SD cards is very easy.

Add the free BEOPLAYER program to you Mac or PC. Reboot.  It will then find and add your music (and photos) to that program. You can also "push" the program by clicking on the right to SETUP, and then SCAN. Once this is done you simply insert an SD card, pull up BEOPLAYER, and select N.MUSIC option.

Now slide your mouse to the LEFT side of the screen. You will see your album collection load. One of the options at the top LEFT of your screen is the SD card. You then click and drag the album you want over towards the highlighted SD card. That album will then load onto the card. Load as many as your card will accept ( 10-20 ). Note that it will also take the album art with the music, which is also a good way to back up your music collection should your PC ever crash, or if you travel.

When finished loading, close the program out and remove the card. Put it carefully into the Beosound 4 SD slot and select A.MEM. Give it a minute and it will play the music, will a monocolour display on the Beosound 4 under the glass.

As I have mentioned before, your music should sound better than if played on your PC or even a CD. It is not only my ears, as Elephant makes note of this observation, too.

Once again, I'm writing this to you listening to the Besound 4 and the sleet outside. Enjoy !

Thanks for the replies - just set my BS4 up and it looks great in my bedroom. The only problem i have is that when it ws packed some of the small polystyrene balls have gone under the glass panel and lodged themselves in the recess by the display! Does the glass panel come off otherwise i'll constantly see small white polystyrene balls looking at me! PS - sounds great and it's so light i'm scared i'll knock it over!

My recollection is that in its original box the glass panel was separate and that one had to assemble it.

I just tried my own unit - but it is not obvious what to do.

And my manuals are packed away - I will try to dig them out tomorrow.

Just pull it off from the sides, it is easily detachable and replaceable

Open it first then tilt the top of the door down. I do not have a bs4 anymore be it was easy to do.

So I open the door until it has slid up and then i push the top of the glass forward thereby forcing it off the slider from the bottom?

Hi - downloaded the manual and with a bit of force through gritted teeth i've got the front off. Needed a good clean as well. One other question - i've downloaded a few albums using Beoplayer onto my SD card but the titles do not scroll as the music plays. Most titles are longer than the display but do not scroll like the radio text does? Is this the case on the BS4 or have i not set it up properly? Thanks for all your helps to date

Mine do not scroll either.

I don't believe Beoplayer truncated the directory and/or filenames, but it might be worth checking.

I presume you checked the setup options in the download manual ?

I wonder is a firmware upgrade contain this as a feature update ............. Hmm

I've set the option as 'Extended' as per the manual - think it just doesn't scroll unfortunately - may look into a firmware update......
