Hello Beoworld! I love this forum! I have a 4002 that you all help me get back on the road and have been LOVING since Halloween! So thank you for that! The other day I hit start at the end of my day and the needle started travelling over, but the platter didn't move.
Backing up about a month ago, I noticed the platter wasn't moving and then I dropped a heavy object onto the table where my record player sits and the platter started moving again. odd... a few weeks later the platter stopped so remembering the previous time, I tapped (with my finger) the housing of the record player and it started again. Last week it did the same thing, I tapped, but I have not gotten it back. IT never started again. The needle moves, but no platter movement.
Today I took it apart to see if the motor had died or whatever,.... I unplugged the 3 wire plug from the board to take a look, looks fine, and at the time didn't notice there are two plugs on my main board, both with three prongs. I plugged the motor into a port (the other one, not the correct one), and the motor immediately started with only power applied to the player. I had not hit the start button yet. I then removed power, plugged the cable back into the correct port (where it was before) and same symptoms. no life on the platter, needle moves.
It seems to me something on the main board might have let go, or I had a cold solder joint that was ok with the few bumps and now is not.
Any thoughts? I have not pulled the board yet, the player is disassembled, but not sure where to go from here. at least i know the motor is good!
And what is the second plug/port for on the mainboard? another motor? a different motor?
Thank you for any insight! :)
Ok
The second plug to which you refer is almost certainly the small LED that sits in the front of your Beogram….you may not have noticed this LED, it comes on whenever power is applied to the Beogram even when the start is not initiated, connecting your motor across this socket by mistake probably didn't do any harm...but don't do it again. Your problem does sound like a loose connection, bad solder joint or loose plug and socket, I would start by disconnecting the remaining plug and sockets to the main PCB one at a time, check the pins for oxidisation, clean them up a little with a toothbrush, and make sure you replace them back correctly...its easy to get the pins out of line when pushing them back in. After that if no change power up and with a wooden cocktail stick or something non metallic try gently disturbing the various connecting cables to see if you can get a result.....that done it will be time to look a little closer at switch contacts.

Craig! Thank you for the response. Ok, I have further news. FIrst I did what you said. Got a wooden chopstick and lightly touched some of the wires to see if anything would come alive. AND IT DID! for 1 full day. Then it stopped again and hasn't come back. I was listening to a record and as I'm on the couch the record player slows to a stop. I tried the same technique of poking around lightly with no luck.
Also I see a label for the LED light, my model does not have a light on the front of the unit.
I decided to pull the board, make sure the pins looked ok and reassemble to see if anything would change. No change.
Everything else functions. The arm comes over and drops etc, but no platter spin.
I've taken a photo of the removed board both sides and dropped it into a google drive folder: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B8RS3JWz-NZ1LU5nUmVscVVIUUE?usp=sharing
Let me know if you see anything. I'm almost ready to go buy a shitty audio-techinica direct drive and be done with this thing... but I feel its my duty to get it running again.
One of the last photos is a chopstick pointing at the bundle of wires i lightly touched last time and the motor came alive.
Let me know if you see anything that jumps out
Thank you!
Ok...from the pictures and description of the fault, and the fact that when you disturbed the connections you show in the picture I would remove the control panel and examine the wiring loom running from the control panel plug in socket to the panel itself, this is almost certainly nothing more that a bad/loose connection issue in this area...sign up for a gold membership here and download the manual for details on how to remove the control panel. Don't throw this away because of a loose wire!
Ok! I promise I won't throw it away! I'll remove the control panel and take a look.
I also will try to sign up for a gold membership! I want to give back to this amazing community. Thank you! I'll keep you posted.
Pulled both the 33/45 speed control board and the lower button board. Continuity was fine on every pin going from the board. After I reassembled carefully, the 45rpm light now has gone out. I disassembled and reassembled, no difference. I suspect that it was bumped too hard on removal, and now is out. ....
After reassembly, no life out of the platter motor. Where does the platter motor get its power? From the larger main board right?
Edit: tap tap tap on the 33 light and its back on. Sound familiar?
Does anyone know where I could send the board out for service? I assume something is wrong with the mainboard... or whatever feeds power to the motor. Thank you!
I sent you MP, probably a good starting point.
Message received! Thank you!
