Hi,
I tested a mint condition BeoSound 9000 MKIII this afternoon and noticed an audible buzz coming from the speakers whenever I adjusted the volume up or down with the panel or with the beo4 remote. I changed speakers and speaker wires thinking that was the issue but same thing. So now I’m thinking it’s something internal. However, when I used the headphone port there was no buzz when adjusting the volume. Is this buzzing normal? What do you think is causing this? Any insight is appreciated.
Thanks
PaulGiles:We had this once with BV11& BL6000, via TX1&RX1 replaced the link cables for screened RJ45 and problem solved.
Do you think the volume buzzing issue is on board or just some bad power link cables?
PaulGiles:First thing I would try would be new cables from Steve @soundsheavenly
I will look into this, thanks. Seller claims the buzzing is normal behavior. This can’t be true right?
You are listening to the signature sound of the unterminated data transmission on the Powerlink cable.
It has been around since the dawn of the LX2800 TV / Beosystem 5500
There are two options
Get Beolabs with the green signature display or get the MKIII Powerlink cable. (ask Steve)
Either way,- your BS9000 is perfectly fine, enjoy!

That's good news! Thanks for the info!
Yes, good cables should resolve this, the noise that you are hearing is the Datalink pulses from pin 6 of the Powerlink cable getting onto the audio channels (pins 2, 3 and 5). The noise is certainly not normal!
Please feel free to get in touch via my sponsor link below if you need any help with cabling and I will be pleased to assist.
Kind regards, Steve.

Thanks Steve. Checking our your site now.
Bang and Olufsen produce exceptional quality in music. Any back ground hum is not
normal. I have had a similar problem with jack from my iMac Computer straight to beolab 11/Beloab 6000 X2. Very annoying hum. All Mk 2 cables, Does not change with the volume. Tried a ground loop thingy: no better. Now, if I use the beocentre 2 "Angel wings" and the connections box, which AUX in going to the iMac, and voila no hum with the Beocentre controlling things.
Interesting. Would this explain my problem of "hummers' on the line when no music playing" on my beolab 6000/Beolab 11from my computer in via Steve's cable (DIN to power link to power link 11 to beolab 6000 daisy chained). I'd try Steves MK3 cables if so.
Thanks.

Hi Dr. Alex,
Sorry to hear that you are having problems.
The issue with pulses of noise when you change volume on a B&O system is different from having a non-B&O device (eg. computer) that generates noise when it is powered down.
First, please can you unplug the computer cable from the Beolab 11 and check that the DIN plug has 7 pins? If not, then the cable isn't the correct one for Beolab 11.
If you have the 7 pin DIN cable in place, please can you check if the Beolab 11 hums when the computer is powered on? If the sub only hums when the computer is powered off then the cable is OK - the usual cause of this issue is the computer allowing noise to be picked up and passed to the speakers.
If the Beolab 11 doesn't hum in any situation, but the Beolab 6000s hum - please let me know and we can look into this further for you. Any questions, please ask.
@ Alexander.
I would suggest getting an external DAC if you run from your PC.
Its a fairly inexpensive way of eliminating noise issues, especially if you go optical.
And,- all thing equal the sound quality should improve, assuming here you are using an analog output on your PC.
I agree with BEOVOX141, even a basic external DAC like this one will give you a great improvement in sound over the computer's internal sound card:-

Hi Steve and thank you. The cable is one of yours, and indeed has seven pins. So its goes from my computer to the beolab 11.
The beolab11 when plugged in alone and powered does HUM (without power going off to the beoloab 6000's).
I can send a signal through an unpowered (battery) Bluetooth dongle and no hum. If I plug the dongle in, hum is back.
Unplugging the computer (shutting it down) and leaving the beolab 11 powered results in no hum at all.
Please let me know if this is unclear.
Hi Alexander,
Thanks for your reply. The 7 pin cable is correctly grounded and shielded for use with Beolab 11, so this won't generate any unwanted noise. If you get noise when connected to the computer, but not when used with other music players (eg. iPod, phone, bluetooth dongle, etc) then the noise is being generated within the computer sound card.
Adding an external USB sound card like the one mentioned above should resolve this.
Alexander:So its goes from my computer to the beolab 11
How exactly are you connecting a PL cable to your PC?
The complication is that we have two different discussions on this thread! Alexander is connecting a Beolab 11 to his pc with a minijack to DIN cable (not Powerlink as per the original discussion).
His noise is coming from the pc sound card from the description.

Aha,- but if the cable combo doesn't provide a GND connection on pin 7 you will always have an issue with ICE powered speakers. A custom MKIII cable with GND connected to pin 2/7 on the mini jack side might just do the trick, perhaps you already have that cable in your selection?
That being said: Get a DAC Alexander! Don't run an otherwise great speaker from an inferior source!
Yes, the cables that I supply do provide the correct grounding connection to pins 2 and 7 of the DIN plug to prevent noise from within the cable. However, no cable can account for the poor performance of a PC sound card, hence the suggestions for an external USB DAC as per the link in the thread above.
Hi I have found the exact same issue with my Beosound 9000, the digital out is fine, but along with the volume also if I change disc or track I get the same 'Buzz' also if it does a change the 'Buzz' is also present. It is not a cable fault in my opinion it is an issue with PCB 32
The only way I could eliminate the hum was to go AUX IN on the B and O head unit connected with the PC out jack.
Going PC direct to the B and O speakers is where the hum is. Its not the PC sound card, nor those excellent cables from Steve.
