Hi there,

I received a beocenter 3500 today, conveniently the seller left out the part about it not having a cartridge or stylus from the description.  Anyway does the tone arm need the cartridge and stylus order to move?  The arm on this wont move.  Disappointing day for sure.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to Beoworld !

The tonearm does not need a cartridge or needle to move.
Does the platter rotate when you press LIFT ?

- If it does, carefully, while the platter rotates, swing the tonearm to the innermost position (where
the records lead-out grooves would be) and see if the tonearm lifts and returns to its resting position.

- If not, a problem with the belt, the motor and/or power supply to the motor will have to be investigated.

How would I go about repairing this?  Is it worth it?

When i press life the platter turns and the indicator light comes on, and there are two clicks quite spaced apart, which sound related to the movement of the arm

Well, I suppose you will have to look inside and see if part(s) of the mechanics has become lose or stuck.

Would starting it with the transport screws in place have damaged the arm?

No. It would normally see the belt come off all the time but it won't damage anything.

Having opened it up, there is a small connector that looks like a coat hanger unhooked, where do i connect it?  It looks like it goes into the cog assembly for the platter

photostream

Can you see that picture?  Underneath the large white cog there is a slot cut which has a hole the same size as the white plastic end on this hook thingy

Turns out that cog comes off easily, it does go into that hole and groove, problem solved!

Do you reckon it is worth it?  It would be more than I paid for the whole system.  I know that sp10/a and sp12/a are compatible, but what about sp14?  They are much cheaper haha

Axel Schuerholz has the SP14, I have one on the way from him, the old one played good on my BG 1202, but got broken and Axel repaired it. If you want a SP10, only by it if your vinyl is in very good or better condition, most of my vinyl is in  good or good- condition

But before you go there, test the rest of the BC 3500, radio reception, sound out, treble, bass, balance and volume potentiometers, FM presets. Headphone.

And if you have a CD player or MP3 player, connect it to the tape in, and test.

All the Beomasters and Beocenters this age are prone to dried out electrolytic  capacitor and maybe some failing trimmers and/or rectifiers, so you will have to count on that some repairs will have to be done, now or later.

Is it worth it, for me as a collector, yes. When these old items are repaired and adjusted up to date, they play better than many new amplifiers costing more than USD 1000.00. But test it and then decide for yourself.Big Smile

My jack to din cable arrived this morning and i've just sat all day listening to it, it puts everything i've ever put music through to shame!  Songs have clarity like never before!  Things are a bit scratchy though, like the switches and the din sockets are kind of slack causing a crackling noise.  Radio works good, treble, bass, balance, presets and volume all do as they should along with the headphone socket!  Trouble is I thought I fixed the turntable but something else isn't working, the arm is now stuck over the platter.  Do these tables have a specific timing?  Should something be adjusted, things move and noises can be heard and i'm guessing something engages electrically in order to engage the larger cog to the platter so i'm unsure, I need to open it again and take a look (and clean the dust away).

The best advise I can give you is to open the TT, clean and lubricate it, take a look at what I did with my BG 1202, the amplifier part will need cleaning too, there are a lot of threads about it in this and in archived forums, the BM 3000 and the BM 4000, will give good examples.

And download the service manual it will be of good help.
