Well, I've been casually listening to some Dynaudio 42's for the last month or two, hooked up to a BeoMaster 7000, via my iMac.
I got some S60's in, so hooked them up - and was a bit 'meh'. More 'oomph' but a very flat sound. Not to my taste, but hey...
I also got some S45's in at the same time and thought 'lesser model, so must be lesser sound'
How wrong was I ?!!!
I don't think I've ever been as taken aback after expecting so little from such a plain looking speaker - then being completely impressed!! I have to admit I know little about the internals on these - but I doubt I'll be selling them any time soon.

If you like the S45, so why don‘t you try the m 150?
Good to hear that. It's better to be pleasantly surprised than to be disappointed I never had the pleasure of listening to the S45's as I don't have too much experience with pre 80's B&O apart from the odd Beolit and the Beomaster 900k. Will give them a try when I have a chance to.

S45s are far better than they should be. It is simply serendipity. A combination of events that add up to a really great small speaker. I have one pair left - gave another set away as I wasn't using them and thought someone else should enjoy them. Not quite as good as my LS3/5As but that is when using AB1s so if just one against the other, the S45s would win by dint of actually having some bass. I remember buying my S75s new and the dealer, who was great, shaking his head and saying I was buying the wrong speakers. The S75s have more bass which is impressive sounding but the S45s are far more accurate. A pair of those with the unfashionable BM2200 would beat most of the compact B&O range even now!

The successor was the S45-2 with 3-way and rubber surrounds. Only the magnet was the weakest part.

No.Beovox S45 (Type 6302) was first. This was a 3-way speaker - it's the one Lee has.Beovox S45-2 (Type 6312) was next. A slight change from Type 6302 with wooden backs rather than composite - not that it did anything to the sound, really.Beovox S45 (Type 6427) is the latest of the S45 range. This is a 2-way speaker with 2-part grills and prone to foam rot. Bottom of therange and a nice little speaker in its own right but nowhere near the previous S45 models.
Type 6302 and 6312 has the magnet problem. Fixable.

Just want to add to the long list of S45-2 advocates. They are incredible.
They are one of the two pairs speakers I retained in storage after my move abroad.
My BM3000-2 along with my pair of S45-2s was my best stereo through college (maybe even still!). Maybe one day I can unite my BeoLab 5000 with my S45-2s.

Of course! However that was the 4000 I frequently switched between them over the past years.
Maybe one day I can unite my 3000 and 4000 with my new-to-me 5000 one day and complete the set

I am in the Innenstadt these days.
CD's are by far my favorite physical media. Sadly, the CD's are all completely packed away and in storage in the US (along with the above mentioned vintage BeoMasters and BeoVoxes ).
I have original S45's (with the moulded resin backs). They are outstanding, and certainly out-perform my much larger Beovox 2600's.

I recently inherited a pair of S45.2s and had the same wow moment as yourself Lee! They just sound “right”. A bit like Beolab 4000s
i just hope the beovirus doesn’t make me start buying these as it has done with Beolab 4000..... Just bought my sixth pair... In lovely blue with a pair of wall brackets which I will sell equalling a net outlay of about £160. 10% of their original price....

Note that the S45 uses a tweeter that some have called "the worst dome tweeter in the world."
So, an old B&O system using a sneered at tweeter sounds "right." Further proof that most audiophile "wisdom" is BS.
