Hello,

Some time ago I acquired BeoLink 5000. It is in relatively good mechanical shape. It is also almost perfect electronically except display. After reading a bit about this problem and little investigation inside remote, it became obvious that cable that connects LCD display to PCB board is partially broken.

This is not something that can be fixed by any DYI jobs, and based on stories I read replacement for this cable is no longer available.
I did a bit of googling on what can be done here and I came across this company: http://www.diyparadise.net/index.html
They basically manufacture similar cables but their end market is old cars owners.

I exchanged few emails with them and I got statement from them that they might be willing to manufacture cable for BeoLink5000. We didn’t get into precise technical details but based on photos I shared with them, they stated that

  • they will ask for:30 Euro per cable
  • they will take this job if minimum order is in range of 100 pieces.

In reality I will need one maybe two cables and will not have much use of remaining 98 :)

Maybe someone on this forum have some idea how to proceed here?
If there is enough demand maybe we can place bulk order (somehow)?

Or maybe someone found better solution to BeoLink 500 cable problem?
Share your thoughts.

Cheers,
Henryk

I can commit to buying 1. I'm sorry that's all I need.

Will they manufacture them with the glue so it is possible to actually attach the cables ?

Hi,

They seems to have some sort of process to produce those cables that it makes attaching them to LCD or PCB an easy task (that what they claim).

I didn't go into much technical details with them but I'm assuming that those cables will have some sort of glue on them that allows attachment.

Cheers,
Henryk

Has anyone found a solution to replace the LCD cable on a Beolink 5000?

Hi,

I can add more information to help you, as I was the designer for the electronic in Beolink 5000 back in 1989-1991.

Both Beolink 7000 and 5000 have a display where the connection from the PCB to the display was done by heatsealing the ribbon band by adding the correct temperature, time and pressure. We did a lot of test to find the right combination. This is very important to get the right strength in the attachment of the cable.

We ended up finding for a temperature of 150 degrees and a heating time of 30 seconds with a pressure of 20 kg / cm2.

It's probably not easy to do manually. We built a machine with a vision camera, as the pitch (distance) between paths on the cable is 0.55 mm. It is difficult to see with the naked eye.

The specified parameters are important, as we saw in the experiment that deviating from these results in a much poorer adhesion of the cable.

I think it could be very interesting if such a cable could be found as many Beolink 5000s lack this. One must remember that the service life of the cable (primarily glue) was 10 years and now it is 30 years ago - so it has lasted better than expected.

Looking forward to seeing if there is a result

Regards Rudi

I want to commit to buy 1 cable, depending on the total repair being possible.

Thank you Henryk, for getting this BL5000 journey started and your effort to find a producer for parts.

Can the tech specialists here and Rudi work out a workable fix?

Put the remaining 86+ parts on eBay and on Beoparts-shop and you will sell them for sure

Hi Guys,

Reading Rudi comments I got a bit more skeptical if DIY fix to this problem is even possible. Assuming that company could produce cable here, for fix to work most likely some special chemicals to remove glue but not destroy pads on LCD screen will be needed. Such thing, if exists could be expensive.

Assuming cable and cleaner exists, workable fix will require specialize precision equipment to assembly all together. This does not sound like DIY job any more.

Even if someone decides to order those cables and then sell them back on eBay their price would have to be (with glue remover) at 50+ Euro level just to break even. For 50+ Euro one might have a chance to buy working BeoLink5000.

With all of that I have to say I’m putting down the gauntlet here. I can help anyone who might want to step in here though.

Sorry guys,
Henryk
