Hi.

I just bought a dead BM5/BS5 where mainboard is dead. It has obvious dead bulged caps.

The unit came with a new non-B&O EPIA-EX motherboard. Did a quick testrun, and swapped mainboard with the new, swapped BIOS and memory over, and was actually quite amazed that the unit came back to life right away.

One thing that does not work is any remote ? Are there the same thing with BM5 as BS9000, that remotes will not work if there is not connected a powerlink speaker ?

The small round power cable is a bit worn, and I suspect that the IR signal cable might be dead, but before getting a new cable I would like to know if it is normal that IR does not work without PL speakers ?

Also. I don't know if it actually is worth it, trying to change caps in the old motherboard ? Another thread indicates that this did not help.

The unit is responsive enough with the smaller 1.6GHZ cpu compared to the B&O 2GHZ, so maybe I should just cut the losses and see if I can clone the system to a SSD to get it sped up a bit :)

Any thoughts ?

Also, the 2 SPDIF ports that are "ekstra" on the std motherboard should be modified/removed.

The round connector is easy to de-solder, but what about the optical port. It seems easy to also just de-solder, and move the old connector over instead. Is that just what is needed ?

Hi

I have changed MB with non original one, and all works as it should.

Not at first ..then execute the factory reset + last SW update and now it is working just fine.

Did you change bios chip and RAM ?

I just moved RAM and BIOS from original MB to non-original. Have not yet done factory reset. Did you do a total recovery from service menu, or what option did you choose ?

just factory reset on BM5 ..+ SW update...for last possible version.

that is all

at first i did try to fix original MB but after 5 hours and 10+ capacitors ..i just cut the case.

i think there is same mistake in 90% of broken BM5 boards but nobody share what it is.

so i purchase new -old stock one on Ebay.

Ok, in the service manual, I can see there is a RECOVERY menu, is that the one you are thinking about ? I cannot find a Factory Reset menu.

yes ..it's RECOVERY menu..that BM5 will go to factory reset i think..

you need keyboard to USB at the back of BM5 to go to that point.

Hi again.

Did the Recovery and SW update, and system seems rock-solid now. I dont actually think I can feel the difference between the 1.5 and 2GHZ CPU.

However, the remote control still does not work. Volume wheel works again. There is no response what so ever from the Beo4/Beo6, and I am also struggling with getting cover art to work on the Beo6. It worked on an earlier BM5/BS5 I borrowed from my dealer some time ago, so I wonder what the issue here is, its just loading forever, and sometimes says "connection timeout". I have started Music Server(dont remember if that is required for Beo6), and it is running. It is currently powered on while I am at work, just to see if maybe it is doing some indexing that could cause Beo6 to not work until it is done ?

Are there known issues with the IR module in beosound that dies ?

Status is that everything works like it should.

Changed the MB to the VIA EPIA-EX 15000, swapped the original BIOS from B&O MB, and removed the Optical and SPDIF connector and relocated the original SPDIF wires.

IR problem was because of a bad power wire, and the Beo6 also works now, had to select another wireless network in my house (all wireless networks are connected to the same switch as the BM5, so I guess some wireless routers are not supported).

Now to find the best way of adding a new SSD Drive.

I have service tool, does anyone actually knows if that can partition and create a HDD from scratch ? What do B&O do if the HDD dies totally, at some point they must be able to create the replacement HDD with the partitions and drives needed ?

Since you have the ServiceTool, you could try to use the .GHO file from the BeoMaster5 directory in the ServiceTool together with Norton Ghost to recreate the 4 partitions on your brand new SSD. The three 'NO_NAME' partitions are fixed, the 'DATA' partition is flexible (and can be expanded).

I don't know how the BM5 and BS5 serials are stored on the HDD, but maybe it's just read from the BM5 and BS5 and copied to the HDD at every startup. You could just give it a try.

Ok. I can confirm we are not so screwed as we think ;)

Just to find out what the Service Tool can do. I put in an old MAC 2.5" HDD (128GB), just to try. Fired the system up with Service Tool, choose "Clone Entire HDD". Norton Ghost opened, it restored the image. After restore, reboot the BM5, it did 3 or 4 reboots by itself. After restoring factory defaults, it booted up without problems, I could do the SW update without any problems :)

Serial is restored on the HDD automatically.

So.. If you have the Service Tool, you will never loose your BM5 :)

No need for cloning stations or anything else. Just a new empty harddrive that works with the VIA motherboard.
