Hello Beoworlders,

I have 2 pairs of BeoLab 6000 which I want to refurbish and give them a second life. Both BeoLabs have the black foam inside which as far as I know is known to cause problems with the electrics. As both loudspeakers work very well at the moment I don't want to risk anydamages and threfore want to changethe foam.

Where do I get the new foam? Are there alternatives to the one from B&O.

My plan is to take the BeoLabs apart, clean everything with the WD40 contact cleaner, change the foam renew the cabling and then reassemble everything.

What do you think? Is this a good idea? Thanks for your help.

I literally wanted to post the same question today.

I just replaced the woofer-surrounds on mine and noticed that the most of the foam has disintegrated.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it didn't seem like the foam is in direct contact with the PCBs like in the 4000s, so it probably isn't quite as dangerous.

Nevertheless, speakers with actual foam inside, instead of rotting glue, probably sound better.

That is exactly my opinion. I love the design of my BeoLab 6000's and I want to keep them for as long as it is possible. I just ordered new speaker cloth and will try to wrap the speakers with high gloss car foil.

I will start the project next week and will post the progress here.

Why would you wrap the speakers in foil?

Is the aluminum damaged? Color change?

Very much looking forward to pictures Smile

No the aluminium is absolutely perfect but I want a pair of black ones for my office. I will send extra detailed pictures of the wrapping.

WD 40 is not a contact cleaner. Keep that well away from anything audio.

WD-40 is the company name  ;-) And yeah their most popular product has the same name but actually they have contact cleaners etc for industry. We use them in the office for our cloud computing server farm and the product is great.

This is the cleaner I use since years and it is amazing. You can use it with your Server while it is operating etc.

Did you make any progress, Tim?

Does anyone know where to get the foam dampeners inside the BL6000?

I tried to talk to my local dealer but they were very, very anti-DIY and not cooperative. (I asked them about new foam pieces, they told me that I should let them replace all 6 driver chassis in their service center... thanks...)

Alternatively does anyone have experience with making dampeners themselves (what material to use etc.).

From the service manual i know the rough shape, but not the dimensions.

I did make a bit of progress but currently I am packed with work so this little project has been on hold a bit. In generall I have made the same experiences like you with B&O dealers.

What I did so far:

- Speaker foam repair on all 4 speakers

- Search and find the perfect new fabric for the BeoLabs [Link]

- clean out the cabins

Next steps:

- find the foam for the cabins

- cut and glue foam

- reassemble everything

A dealer in Berlin is selling foam kits for Beolab 4000, 6000 and 8000 at the moment.
Seems to be OEM as well.

Just search for "Bang & Olufsen Dämpfungsmaterial" on eBay.

Very annoyingly it is the same dealer wich refused to sell the same product a few months ago in a very rude fashion! Thats exactly how you lose young fans of the brand!

Glad this popped up again. I have a pair of  BL6000s I need to get around to restoring, and I hadn't considered checking the foam. I have 4 woofers sourced from a dealer, who's now out of business of course. He was an outstandingly good dealer, very helpful and knowledgeable, the exact kind B&O needs. I agree the BL6000 is a wonderfully styled speaker.

I will be interested in seeing what the wrapping process is like and the results too.

Jeff

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

We just send ours to our local B&O dealer. Very reasonable cost and done by B&O so win win.
