Hello all
for all those people that use the apple remote app for controlling an Apple TV, iTunes etc for 2 way communication between device and ipad, phone etc.
well if like me you got annoyed that each time you changed to another app and then went back and it had to reload and download the artwork again.
finally apple have released a new version that seems to fix this and does not keep disconnecting.
i had to reboot my ipad for it to find the device.

The new version of Remote is good, previously it interacted with shared iTunes libraries, however now it seems to have the addition feature to "talk" to Apple TVs - I am not sure whether it is accessing my shared iTunes library or my iMatch library but it really doesn't matter !
What I do like, is that the "Play Next" and "Add to Up Next" are a simple finger touch away on the iPad.
I have spent today moving speakers between rooms, and having used the above for testing the wireless setup I have now relaxed with randomised Spotify and have had a wonderful two hours of music !

And here we are almost 12 months later and there is another Remote upgrade (version 4 I think).
It is both good and bad news.
Bad news is that it needs to have iOS7 so there goes any advanced controls from my iPad 1 *sigh*. The iPad & its wrap around A3 are becoming "dumber" and soon it will basically be a semi-intelligent speaker ... I have the Airfoil speaker app ... I just need to find one that turns the iPad into an AirPlay receiver.
The good news is that running on our iPad Mini it gives advanced swipe etc finger controls to your ATV ! And .... (drum roll) a keyboard so you no longer have to have endless Beo4 clicks to search your iTunes music on the ATV.
And even into the YouTube search box -- ahhh bliss !
Does this mean we have finally seen what the Jobs' biographer meant when he said that Steve had cracked the TV interface ? (or maybe he meant he had dropped his Beo 6 )

The keyboard I was referring was the typing into the Apple TV ... but I shall test your assertion :-)

@peria - you are correct - it was on my iPad 1's remote as well ... I guess I had never noticed it and went hunting for new features on the new version - features new to me but not you !

Can I ask - politely - why users are still stuck on an iPad 1? Particularly when we look at and purchase expensive state-of-the-art bleeding-edge designed B&O kit? It genuinely perplexes me. The iPad 1 had poor battery life, was very heavy, poor screen and was a MK1 product. It's now extremely slow compared to the iPad Air and I see lots of complaints online from users who say 'this app is slow on my iPad 1', as if it should run smoothly.
I bought an iPad Air last Friday, upgrading from an iPad 2. It's a revelation in so many ways. No slowdown anywhere, very light, easy to hold, great battery life, never gets hot, superb screen and runs all the recent apps without issues. An iPad Air starts at only £399.
It's just a genuine question. I don't get it. It's a device many of us regularly, but choose to stick with the first revision. It's generally not hugely expensive (half the price for a BS8), but I constantly see people online moaning their first revision iPad 1 isn't supported/is slow/etc.
As for the new Remote app. It's ok. Just a redesign. I was expecting more. A remote hard-reset would be useful!

Why upgrade if a product still suits your needs?
Most people check their mails, surf some websites, run a few apps....We do have an ipad 2, sure the later versions are lighter, faster etc., but there is no use for us at the moment to upgrade.

PS: ipad 1 was launched in the beginning of 2010, and no more support (upgrade to ios 6) from apple from september 2012...that is ok if you provide a stable ios (which they do), but bug fixes? No that I know of any bugs, but even Windows still offers bug fixes etc. for Windows XP...

It's gaining a reputation for being the iPad 1 or 3 of the iterations. Under specced for the 64 bit processor.
I just upgraded from the iPad 1 to iPad Air.
IPad was still a great device, no problem with battery life or else.
Just the main app I use (Flipboard) was crashing all the time because of the lack of memory. Other apps were fine.
iPad air is fantastically fast, and it is a worthy upgrade. My only problemette is that the screen feels like plastic not glass.

Neutered? It's certainly far from that. I have no complaints at all. No slowdown, nothing, and I have plenty of apps open. I think you've been reading too much forum negativity elsewhere :)
The whole '1GB isn't enough' is an issue generated mostly from assumption, rather than real-life use!

Sadly we can't have a large reduction the weight/size and then expect thicker glass, Phil. There's always a compromise. It's still glass, just thinner. The original iPad Mini has always had the same glass surface as the Air.
The reason for asking about the iPad 1 wasn't whether it's useful or not, it's just that any complaints you see online are always from iPad 1 users! "This is slow on my iPad 1", "this crashes on my iPad 1" etc. I remember reading about The Times app, which is a bit of a beast, with so many "fix this for my iPad 1, it's sloooow!" complaints.
I also have kept and use my iPad 2, which was a big upgrade from the iPad 1 (better battery, thinner etc), for the BS8. It's much much slower than the Air though. Using it as a remote or similar is wise, but I just don't see how or why users expect performance levels for the latest modern apps, such as The Times and so on, then complain when they don't get it.
Yes Moxxey I agree, the iPad 1 is now an old product. And of course it is getting slow.
If I was an iPad user, I would definitely upgrade mine.
I'll probably upgrade it to the mk2 iPad mini. (when out)
