I put brand new ones in when I get in could it be maybe the points on the battery part itself

Check to see if the Beo4 is sending out a signal by viewing the IR window through a mobile phone camera or video camera. You should see a purple glow/light when you push the buttons on the remote.

You haven't accidentally changed the "option" on the TV by any chance?

If you are not getting any signal out of the remote through a camera then it sounds like the remote is faulty or the batteries are dead.  Check one of your other remotes that you know works, to see if that shows up in the camera, just to be sure you know what to expect.

Knowing a little bit more about the set-up might help!

1. You say TV worked before you got it home. Did you get the TV and remote together?

2. You said that the Beo4 remote works for one or two presses, what exactly do you mean? (tell us a bit more about what happens when you use your remote. Does the TV turn on/off etc)

4. Were they new "new" batteries or some that had been in another remote, or lying around for a while? (Are you sure they are in the correct way in the remote?)

5. Are you getting a readout in the LCD display? and does it change when you press TV (to show TV) or DVD (to show DVD) or CD (to show CD etc?

6. Can the remote turn the TV on ?

7. TVs in UK now only work on the digital channels so you will need a separate digital receiver, have you got a set top box or satellite receiver attached? ( I don't know enough about the Avant VHS to know if it has a PUC capable of controlling attached STBs etc. If it does you need to press the correct combinations off buttons to see the STB/satellite reciever.)

Ok I will start from the beginning I bought the tv from eBay I collected yesterday I tested it out fully at there home where they had a sky hd box I tested the moving base and all channels and settings I knew. I then took tv home which I'm going to use in my mancave to play my old consoles ie Super Nintendo mega drive and many others I plugged in the tele the little red light came on in top right hand corner to tell me it's in standby mode I then pressed the tv button on the remote the little lcd said tv then pressed channel 1 nothing happened so I then turned it on from the back of tv carried on pressing buttons and nothing so I then put brand new Duracell battetys I bought on the way home into the remote tried the exact same thing with the buttons and still nothing. I then removed the back cover off the remote and started to turn the battery's with my finger while pressing buttons and the Menu screen came on then again the next press of a button nothing again. The remote itself looks mint no marks or dents the screen itself is great it changes between tv radio lights easily. So all in all the remote does nothing to the tv at all but the remote itself goes thru it's menu on the little screen off the list button. I'm more pissed off that I had it working in there house before I bought it. Is there anything I'm doing wrong can I reset it or something ? Help I rang bang and olf in Chelmsford a really nice fella called Darren said it sounds like it needs cleaning and re soldering for £40 worse case it needs a mouth board for £70. I told him the prob and he said it could be points on battery's as well but I will prob take to him unless someone can help on here

I think that unless you can see the flashing IR emitters out of the remote on a video camera, it sounds like it is dead. But if the turning of the batteries got some result then maybe you need to try cleaning the terminals. Lightly scratch the +ve terminal with a pin ( the small gold oblong at the top of the battery compartment) and lightly rub the -ve (spring) with some very fine sand paper the put the batteries back in and try the camera test again.

You should see the two IR emitters flash every time you press any button. (see pic below from my mobile phone camera)
