I recently purchased a 5500 to go with my Penta 1 speakers. I ordered speakerlink cables and din to RCA cables so I could take advantage of the speaker readout. I installed the new cables and nothing, no sound from anything. The RCA connections work just fine but none of the DIN connections do. I have be talking with Steve over at Heavenly and so far we have not come up with any viable solution so I thought I would throw this out to the group and see if anyone has had a similar problem. By the way Steve's cables are really nice and well made, they are not the problem. I am not familiar with the wiring scheme and did not know if there was a common connection to all the receptacles. Thanks in advance....
Hi, have you connected the cables to pre amp din connections on bm 5500?
the bridges on line out still in place?
You get any sound from the headphone socket?
could be a broken mute relay
One more question, Pentas are active or passive?
Preamp loops installed?

Hi NinerRDO,
Welcome to Beoworld! Sorry to hear that you are having problems. I think we have corresponded already via email so thanks for your kind words regarding the cables.
The RCA and DIN sockets on the Beomaster 5500 should be linked inside the unit, so I haven't seen a situation where the RCA sockets work but the DIN sockets don't. Hopefully someone else on the forum will have encountered this issue before.
Some versions of Beolab Penta speakers have a switch underneath marked "Audio/Video", if your speakers have this, please set the switch to "Audio" to get the displays working with the Beomaster. The switches on the front panel of the Pentas should be set to "Auto" when using the Speakerlink inputs.
It is worth noting that if the Pentas show orange lights instead of red or green then this indicates a fault with the amplifiers.
If you can please remind me of the full details of the devices that you have got connected to the Beomaster, I will be pleased to assist further.
Kind regards, Steve.
Steve.

You got sound from the headphone socket of your bm 5500?
could be a broken mute relay.
try to plug and unplug a headphone on listen if you hear a relay clicking.
sometimes this would help, and the din sockets will work again.
during the headphone is plugged in the din sockets are muted
I tried the headphone socket and heard no relay noise, I also discovered with headphones plugged in the speakers still work so I am assuming said relay is defective.
My Penta's have no switch. I have tried all the RCA connections and they work fine. None of the DIN connections work that I can tell. I also get no lights on the Pentas at all with the speakerlink cables connected.
Active
I do get sound via headphone but the speakers also continue to play, they do not mute.
Ok, first of all, if you have Beolab Pentas you could not run them on them on the din sockets of your 5500. the Signal on the din sockets come from the amplifier of the 5500 and thebeolab Pentas have an amplifier integrated.
this will not work! The din sockets are for passive speakers speakers.
try if a passive one works on them.
you have to run your Pentas on the rca sockets Preamp out.
this will work
Hi Schletti82,
Please rest assured that B&O intended the 4 pin Speaker 1 outputs of the Beomaster 5500 to be used with active Beolab Penta speakers, as the Pentas include circuitry to allow them to accept the amplified outputs of the Beomaster via their Speakerlink inputs. This is the correct way to operate Beolab Penta speakers from a Beomaster 5500 to get sound and the speaker displays working, as per page 8 of the B&O manual for the Beolab Penta speakers. This is correct for all three versions of powered Beolab Penta speakers.
The RCA pre-amp out sockets of the Beomaster 5500 can also be used to the RCA Line inputs of the speakers, but the speaker displays will not function unless 4 pin Speakerlink cables are used.
Sorry Steve,
you are absolutely right. thought of other active speakers like 8000er.
my foult.
But to try if the din sockets will work with passive speakers would help.
first thing to check I think is the mute relay
Hi,
Thanks, that is a good idea, testing the speakers via the RCA pre-amp out sockets will be a good way to check the pre-amp stage of the Beomaster, as well as confirming that the speakers are working.
I am inclined to believe a relay is the problem. I have ran the Pentas on other audio equipment and they work fine. I can run any device I want through the 5500 as long as it is via RCA. Now I need to consider is it worth repairing or just get another unit. I really like the sound combination of the 5500/Penta.....
