Beocord 8004 - mechanically working fine and playback fine with previously recorded tapes but when recording the left channel is nearly in the red at 0 on the left slider and is distorted at anything above.

Right channel recording working perfectly. Any thoughts please?

Thanks.

If your deck has the level switch at the rear, check that it is working.
Give it a shot of contact cleaner and work it a couple of times.

Thanks Martin, that was my first thought as it sounded as though the distorting channel was stuck in the DIN setting.

Unfortunately my 8004 doesn't have the line/DIN switch on the rear - so does that mean that my 8004 is supposed to auto switch between the two inputs and if so what could be faulty?

Just wondering if I can record from the front DIN as a workaround.

Sorry for so many questions!

The switch at the back (right next to the DIN socket) is a level switch, not an input switch.
The OpAmps are known to failure, it could be one of them - there's many.
Else check capacitors and trimmers. Capacitors age and trimmers fall apart from oxidation.

A scope comparing the signal paths would help a lot.
