Hi all,

long time lurker, first time poster.

Recently got my hands on my grandparent's B&O turntable, tape deck, amp & speaker set (which admittedly I've been coveting for quite some time.)

I've always loved the B&O set so would like to get it up and running again, starting with the turntable.

So the obvious problem I see is that when turned on the tone arm runs all the way left and returns all the way back without stopping, lowering etc.

With the help of the forum and the beolover blog I've opened up the turntable to have a look, everything looks clean and in place, except for the End Groove Detection light unit, which is missing in its entirety.

Where would I be able to source such a replacement part?

I would also like to get some replacement belts so if I can kill many birds with one stone that would be great!

Thanks in advance,

Andre

I would send a PM to Dillen on this forum. He offers many of the exact replacement parts for B&O.

Andre:

End Groove Detection light unit, which is missing in its entirety.

Only very few decks have this - and are supposed to have it.
In these decks, end of record detection is done by looking at fast pulses from the pulley opto.
In other decks, end detection is done by looking at high carriage motor voltage.

In your case it sounds like a general record detection problem, in which case you should be looking at the sensorarm (the arm next to the tonearm).
A light should shine down from under it, onto the platter/record.
Do you have this light?

Hi Martin

thanks for the reply.

Yes there most definitely is a light in the sensor arm.

Interestingly enough, if the turntable is fully assembly and switched on, the arm simply moves over the platter and back again to the start position.

If the turntable is disassembled, with the platter removed and then switched on, the arm moves into position to play a normal sized vinyl, stops and starts lowering the arm. If I press On again it lifts the arm and continues on its way to the end of the vinyl and then back to the start positon.

I would like to post a video of the operation as perhaps there are some elements missing in my explanation

Sounds perfectly fine, assuming there is no record on the platter.

Sorry for asking, but have you tried it with a record on the platter?
The deck performs as you describe if no record is found.

I'm embarrassed to say I haven't tested it with a record yet.

I've received it as is with the message saying the turntable does not work ie. the tonearm does not detect a record.

So I've blindly followed the above without doing my own tests, let me do that first and Ill revert back to you.

In the meantime, I don't think this turntable has been used let alone serviced in quite a few years, would it be worthwhile in procuring some of the belts for backups?

Both belts look quite good, although the little triangle belt seems to fit a little loose both seem in quite good shape

Ok so testing it this weekend for the first time with a record (duh).

So yea, some issues with playback but the Beogram most definitely detects and plays the record.

So I'm a bit perplexed as thing has not been used for some years due to there being some or other issue, being told by family members it does not detect the vinyl records. Oh well, it will remain a mystery

Issue with playback is it plays fine for a few minutes and then starts repeating the same section of the record, I opened up the little top right inspection panel and had a look while the record was playing. Seems the little belt driving the gold threaded rod is slipping, it will drive fine in one direction (say pressing backwards) but pressing forwards the force of the little wheel turning actually pushes the belt away and it does not catch or drive.

Ill perhaps start with cleaning the belt and gear, reinstall everything and see if this makes a difference.
