So I am finally buying my own place, and I have been considering if I should stay with my Beolab 7.2 as a pure stereo system, or if I should go for a surround setup.

As I want dedicated speakers for music with a stand alone system, the surround speakers would just be for the tv-setup.

I was thinking that Beolab 14.4 would be a nice option together with one of the Beolab 7.4 I have in storage. The satellites would not show much, and it would give a good, clean feel.

I guess I need a surround processor with pre outputs? Would I connect the 7.4 to the amp, or should it be connected with a converter to the 14’s output?

Anyone that has done this and have any cents to give?

You use the 7.2 for listening to music?

In any case, BL14 has no outputs per-say. The only outputs go directly to the satellites,... but they are amplified at that point, and that output has also gone through processing specifically for the satellite driver.

The BL14 would be connected directly to a pre-amp, as would your BL7.4.

I meant stereo system as for tv sound. I do listen to music from it from time to time, but it is not ideal.

Leo,

I was blown away by the great sound from a BeoLab 7-2 running off a BeoSound Essence Mk2. I had it connected up as a temporary system, and a visiting colleague absolutely thrashed it with some of his own music at VERY HIGH LEVELS. It didn’t skip a beat. I was very impressed.

I don’t know to what degree the Essence’s Speaker Setting contributed to that phenomenal sound balance. But I will set up the combination permanently when I finally settle into my proper Budapest apartment.

Don’t you have multiple BL7-4s from a previous setup? Why not reverse the roles and use the 7-2 as front centre, with 4 x 7-4 for front and rear L/R? Hook them all up to the Almando 5.1 surround processor?

I have two of them now. But the reason for doing this would to have the acoustic lense for the center channel.

I haven’t tried a surround setup comparing 7.2 vs 7.4 as center, but I am pretty sure the 7.4 will be the best option.

Need to figure out what to do as this is going up permanently.

Bad idea! The 7-4 is tuned significantly different  from the rest of the 7s. I have actually tried it out, does not work!

BUT,- if you have used the 7-4 as centre you will never be satisfied with the performance of the 7-1,2,6 in video mode.

That being said I absolutely love the Beolab 7ens, by now you will know why! Smile
