"Hi Martin,I recently was lucky and got myself a mint condition Beocord 2000 cassettedeck, I got it cheap because it was in need of new belts and a cleaning.Now it runs but with with a huge amount of wow, I can actually see the tape spools speed up and slow down with the naked eye. The cooling fin at the back gets very warm, is this normal?Can't be the belts, I think. They are all new from Portugal. If I send it over to you would you care to take a look at it?"

The motor pulley wiggles back and forth when I push it manually and it can only be rotated in the most upright position. It's a free world. The belts are comfortably cheap and unfortunately also plentyful, it seems,- but my heart cries.

For my first Beosystem 5000 I bought belts from the bespoken seller for the Beogram 5000, Beocord 5000 and Beogram CD50. They are all still operating.
But this time, for the second system, I ordered belts from you instead. It´s not even that much more, than from the seller in Portugal. It must be lack of knowledge, that people are buying them of Ebay. It was for me; I´ve learned since.
This weeks result;
- 2 motors for Beocord 6000/8000 series, plus a capstan bearing.- 1 motor for Beocord 5000 (plus a bit of power supply repair sent to me)- 2 motors for Beogram 59xx (3500/4500 etc.) series (I only had one, so unfortunately I couldn't help the other owner right now)- 1 motor for Beosound OuverturePlus three or four others that I couldn't help, because I am running out of motors.
Things are going REALLY fast downhill.The belts look about right but are WAY wrong when it comes to elasticity.You can easily tell the difference in the belts, if you compare to the original.They are typically far too tight, putting a far too high sideways load on the delicate sinter-bronze bearings in the motors.The bearing material is so delicate, you can scratch it with a nail, but because of the way it runs (no bearing/spindle metal contact) it will easily last a century or more if treated correctly.The bearings are simply ground away, The spindle hole is opened to an oval shape.The problem was always the same with the cheap (asian and german) standard "toy-" belts, and I've mentioned in dozens of times, but they are now being spread out tsunami-wise on Ebay listed as suitable for B&O, - and B&O units are dying like never before.
In the best of cases the deck simply fails to function.If the protection system (Beocord 5000 etc.) doesn't kick in right away the deck will typically run for a few weeks.Then it will start to whine or screech (goodbye motor bearings), the safety circuits (if any) will kick in and the deck will grind to a halt.For some decks this halt will be permanent, - and if not, requiring at least a replacement motor (and a set of correct belts), but often also a couple of electronic repairs.For Beocord 5000 a brief puff of smoke will be seen from the power supply at the rear of the Beocord as the 10 Ohm safety resistor burns.In Beocord 2000 it will be the 4,7 Ohms resistor in the regulator circuit near the cooling fins.Etc..My heart cries.
I would pin this to the top of the forum - one would not buy cheap tyres for a Bentley, why buy cheap fake parts for B&O?

I got a wrong belt fitted on the tape deck of my BC9500 in a B&O "sepcialized" workshop here in Germany.
Fortunately, with the informations and the right parts from Martin, I could safe my tape deck!
So I did not try to safe mony, I just relied on the wrong "expert"!

It has been like that with countless parts for decades.Many were already reproduced, many more will come.Belts for open-reel decks? - Perhaps, if demand is high enough.

I agree with you, of course. I'm just not "Immortal Duncan Macklaud" and I'm unlikely to get someone else to mass-produce the necessary straps somewhere again in my life ... And the demand is only decreasing over the years ...

I can tell you - that's not quite the case.
I'm not arguing. I just ask and listen to what experienced people say.
his is a good thread to know about: I had no idea you could damage the TT using the wrong belt!

That's the problem: you don't get the right belts, the wrong ones will end the tape recorder ...
