I'm not sure if this happened due to my Beogram's age, but the rear right corner of the dust cover just snapped off the back plate that holds the dust cover and the torsion spring together. Apparently, the thin plastic tab that helps the dust cover move up and down on its axis broke and caused the torsion spring to snap closed. I took the entire assembly apart and tried a lame repair using CA glue, but the tension is just too much to hold the piece together.
In lieu of trying to find another dust cover and probably having to take out a home improvement loan to pay for it, I'm going to try and use GB Weld of some type of epoxy to reattach the broken piece. But I'm wondering if it's possible to clamp the torsion spring in a vice and give it a bit of "rotation" just to take off some of the force. Has anyone tried this before? Even with a successful repair of the plastic piece, I'm not putting any faith in the longevity of the repair if that torsion spring is going to be pushing on the corners of the dust cover the way it currently does.
This Beogram was never dropped or mishandled in any way. It's from a single owner who treated it with much respect. I just lifted the dust cover and WHAM! Completely unexpected breakage.
