Hi Beoworlders,
Would anyone be interested if I were to make a video guide on how to add Digital Signal Processing to older Beolab speakers? I have just set up DSP with my Penta 3 speakers and the results have been astounding! They are now sounding crisp and clear, quite a transformation. If this is of interest, I can video the process and explain what is needed......
What do you think?
Kind regards, Steve.

Hi Steve,Of course we're interested in pimping our good old Penta's :-).

What did you use? Minidsp?
Please tell us more... ;-)
Hi Dante,
I will explain all in the video, basically I used a PC with Room EQ Wizard and Equalizer APO (both free software) to do room analysis and correction. Quite a straightforward process with minimal cost, the results are well worth the effort.
Absolutely not. This is witchcraft of the highest order, and I strongly disapprove!
Part of me agrees....but then I heard the improvement to the sound and now I am fully converted to the "dark side" of DSP!

Actually Steve is not ‘pimping his good old Penta’s’.
What he is doing is to make changes to the sound informations, that are send to the speaker in order to compensate for their behaviour in his specific room.
There is no witchcraft working there - this is pure science and mathematics.....just like anything else related to building speakers.
The Penta’s themselves are not touched at all - this would require building DSP-based crossovers and a lot more into these......and a lot of testing and work (like the guys at B&O have done for years and years now).
Those who would like to learn more about using DSP for adjusting the (sound of the) speakers to the given room, could start with this proper book from Mitchko:
https://www.amazon.com/Accurate-Sound-Reproduction-Using-DSP/dp/1520977905/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=
You can read a review of it here:

(And there is a lot of work done on this subjet out there).
Happy DIYing, Steve 🙂

Mikipidia:DSP = Dark Side of the Penta’s
Hi everyone,
Thanks for your patience, I am pleased to confirm that the video is now online - apologies in advance for the rather optimistic title

Please let me know what you think.....
Hi Steve,
I really appreciated your insights on adding DSP. My setup is a BV 7-40 mkIV with BL 7.4, Sonus faber Concerto fronts and BL 4000 rears, plus Apple TV 4k. After watching your video I wondered if I could use a miniDSP nanoAVR DL (https://www.minidsp.com/products/ht-series/nanoavr-dl) to connect the ATV and internal Blu-ray player to the BeoSystem 3 in the BeoVision. If it worked it should allow me to have reasonably inexpensive room correction for movies and music.
Any advice on feasibility would be appreciated.
Regards, Daniel
Hi Daniel,
Glad you liked the video! I haven't used MiniDSP myself, but it should be possible to connect this between the Powerlink outputs of the Beosystem 3 and the speakers to manage the sound. If you decide to go ahead, please let me know and I can help with cables to get everything connected.
I will be interested to hear how you get on!
