I have a BV11 and I never fail to be impressed by how it’s thin speakers are able to produce deep sound, particularly when watching movies. What would be the real benefit of adding external speakers and/ or a sub woofer to this TV? I am often tempted, particularly now that BL4000's are at rock bottom prices, to add more speakers, but would there be any real benefit in your average living space?

How big is your living space?

Personally, my first improvement would be to add dedicated left and right fronts to widen the soundstage, if space permits

9m x 5m, narrowing to 3m away from the TV. The TV is offset towards one corner and mounted on a hinge. So the typical viewing distance is probably 4-5m diagonally. But at other times the TV is viewed from the far end of the room, without bringing it out on its hinge. So I think I've actually answered my own question: if you have highly variable viewing options you are not going to improve the soundstage with extra speakers unless you set the TV to only feed the speakers for one specific viewing position (if possible in the settings).

I have a Beolab 11 connected to my BV11.

It adds a nice “bottom” to the sound.

Fiddled a bit in the BV11 soundsettings do get the bass I wanted.

Depends mostly on how you use the tv, do you watch mostly movies or just the news? How much pure music time is there and would you even care for surround sound? Etc etc. So what and how do you mostly use your bv?

That might be a good option.......

I am thinking that for extra speakers something like the BL3 with acoustic lenses would provide a more flexible 'sound stage' for variable viewing positions, but I still wonder whether it is really worthwhile when the TV itself has such a good sound output, including good stereo separation.

The TV is used primarily for movies plus regular TV drama broadcasts.

Completely agree on that.

But be prepared to spend some time for the right placement for the BL11 and the right settings for the combination of both.

For movies you might be better off with the BL 2 or BL 19 subwoofer and either BL 17 or BL 3 would work well for surrounds. Although a tower like the BL 18 or older BL 6000 would be great for surrounds. You need the surround speakers to be fast and not overwhelm the fronts. My 2 cents worth. With the BV 11, adding a BL 2 would be amazing for movies.

B&O in my life 😊:

  • Beolab 6000 + Beolab 11 + Beosound Core with Essence Remote (Bedroom)
  • Beoplay A9 Mk2 (Living Room)
  • Beosound 1 with wireless dock (Portable)
  • Beosound Balance (Dining)
  • Beoplay H95 (Focused listening, travel)
  • Beoplay H9 (3rd gen) (retired)
  • Beoplay P6 (Portable)
  • Beotime wall clock (hallway entrance)
  • BMW X5 50i with B&O Audio Package (Commute/drive)

More then half the experience of a movie is the sound. So please ad more speakers.

Beovision 7-55 MK1 red, Beolab 10 red. Beolab 50, all black. Beolab 17 broken ice. Beolab transmitter. Apple tv4 and apple express 2.

Agree on that too.

But that does only make sense when you add front speakers and surround speakers (and the sub).

And I did not read in the posts from Graham that he is ready for that kind of upgrade.

Graham,

As I've now known you for quite a few years, I'd be happy to send you some 4000's to try out and see how you get on.

If you don't like them, then you know - and all I'd ask you to cover is the postage.

Email me if you're up for that!

Thanks for your kind offer Lee! However, before I do anything I still have the dilemma of the likelihood that I simply can't find a layout that will suit all the possible viewing positions. Thinking a bit further, this is possibly a disadvantage of having a motorised hinge or stand and several viewing positions.... you are really totally dependent on the built-in sound system that turns with the TV..... so it's just as well that the BV11 is as good as it is........ and maybe, apart from considering a sub woofer, I should just stick with it!

And that's not taking account of SWMBO who thinks we already have too many sound systems (separate from the TV)!

Graham

(Peter Pan.....with those layouts I guess you don’t need to do much, if any, TV turning!)

Speakers look great in the middle of a room without any wires or connections. Smile

Well, one problem with a hinged mount as you mention is that having multiple viewing positions doesn't track well with a home theater speaker setup. The latter requires you to pick a preferred viewing/listening location and stick with it, so it's a choice between viewing/room design flexibility and surround sound most often.

Personally, I find that to get that immersive experience surround speakers are a lot more important than a wider left/right spread, and a sub is also more important to the experience than wider L/R speakers. And L and R mains that are too far apart can be detrimental to the cinema surround experience, as sounds tracking L and R far outside the screen can cause cognitive dissonance as opposed to seamless immersion.

So, if it were me and I were adding things, I'd do surround speaker first, then a sub, and wider L and R mains last if at all. Or, just do a sub, deep bass is a real thrill with some movies, and doesn't require the limitations on seating arrangement and difficulty wiring surrounds.

Yeah! That's the magic of B&O brochures. Of course in real life its very different: even with Wisa, you still have to bring power to them!Stick out tongue

Maybe I should have read Geoff's tonmeister BV11 review of reviews  before asking the original question!
