I am about to dip my toe into the world of compressed audio to see if it's acceptable or not.....so a few questions.....
1. Connecting computer - what's the best way - to use the speaker output of the computer? - is there any other way? Will investing in a good quality soundcard for the computer make any difference (it's quite old - about 5 years.)
2. I have been given an ipod (never had a mp3 player before) - which socket do you use to connect to the Beocenter - the headphone socket or the multi pin socket at the base of the ipod?

1. Comp to 2300, use speaker out from computer, I upgraded an old comp with a new soundcard, didn't hear any difference, the new soundcards are more for getting surround sound the quality in 2 channel stereo will normally not get better. connect using this one
2. you can use the same cable for your Ipod, and use head phone socket on the Ipod.
Now, if you want to be a bit more flexible, get this one
and connect with this one to the 2300
It has 4 RCA, 2 for sound out and 2 for sound in, the ones for sound out you can use if you later want to connect an amp with other speakers.
For the comp and Ipod connect with this one

You are now flexible, the TC 754 is also a phono preamp and you can connect a TT, and after connecting the comp and ipod you still have space for one more item, like TV.

I use the headphone socket of my laptop into the AUX on my BM6500
Most cables will use the heaphone socket of the iPod into the Tape 2 socket of the BM6500
You will probably need an AUX switch as they will both use the AUX socket of the BC2300

I run the digital output to a DAC Magic and thence to my BM5500 and Beoport which feeds the rest of my house.

Peter - when you say the digital output - do you mean the multi pin socket on the bottom of the ipod?
Is the sound quality using the the digital output run through a DAC, noticeably better than taking the output from the headphone sockets?
I used an external dac between my computer and my BC2. The external dac (cheap and easy but much better sound than the built in of the computer).
Another advantage with this setup is that you dont accidentaly lower the output volume on your computer..
The best ananlog way is to use the AUX input with the line outpout from the iPod.
I use a Revoxbeo interface to do that; in the same time you can control your iPod with the BEO4
