My youngest daughter, who turns 12 tomorrow, came to me with a problem last Friday.  Her Beogram RX-2 (one of three I have throughout the house) wasn't working she said.

We went into the bedroom and placed a Panic! at the Disco LP on the RX-2.  I pressed the play/start button.  The record began to spin and the tonearm moved to the start of the record, but then the record stopped spinning.  I gave a little spin assist at the label, and the record began to spin again, but the tonearm did not lower the stylus onto the LP.  Pressed "Cue" and the stylus lowered and the record played.

"You need a new belt," I said.

I removed the record, then took the platter off, to which she cried, "That comes off?!?!" and showed her the belt that needed replacing.

I told her I'd order a belt and we'd put it on when it came in.  That was last night.

I walked her through the whole thing.  Showed her the service manual.  Showed her the two screws on the bottom to remove.  Showed her how to move the top plate out of the way.  Showed her the connections to the front PCB that she needed to be careful with.  Showed her how to remove and replace the belt.  (She couldn't believe the difference in the two belts.)  We put it back together and tested it, and all is well with her RX-2 again.

At the end I asked her if she could do this all by herself if she had to.  She said she wasn't sure.  So the last thing I showed her last night was this forum.  Just in case I'm not there for her next time.
