I would personally never want external amps again, it’s ugly to me and makes a mess. Also too many variables for tweaking and such. But that’s just meSmile

I still use the CX 100 speakers and a Beocenter 9000. I’ve used a Beosound essence to stream my music and the fidelity in a bedroom is really quite good. I’m not sure anything right now is as warm or as sympathetic to higher tones as this set up is. I also use a Beovox Cona as a subwoofer that’s out of sight as the bass.  I have been looking at the Sonos amp to take the place of the Beosound essence and to give more power to the speakers. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

I wish for a couple of boxes.

A box that can control BeoGram turntable via Beo4 / BeoRemote1 and via NL.

A box that you can connect old motorstand to non-Beo TV.

Earle:

I'm just curious,.... would there be any interest if B&O introduced a line of BeoVox speakers that would work with third party amps/receivers? Software issues would be nonexistent, and from what I remember, the CX100's were some pretty damned good sounding boxes. This could also potentially position the company into the more mainstream market, both in terms of flexibility and affordability... although, I foresee great debate in the boardroom about it.

I don't think that passive speakers is "mainstream" today...
Most people buy small bluetooth speakers.
I think that 9 out of 10 young people doesn't know what a passive speaker is...
Recently I sold a pair of CX50 speakers. I got several questions from young people who asked, if they could be connected directly to their iPhones -or even if they had Bluetooth... Huh?Big Smile

I think you're right Steffen, although there are a number of traditional speaker manufacturers that manage to stay in business.

I got an email from Klipsch the other day, touting a small bookshelf speaker of theirs that had: wifi, BT, aux, and USB digital inputs, built in amps in one speaker, with one speaker wire running from it to the 2nd speaker. A complete traditional audio setup, including phono input, in two speakers. I think that this is what would sell although I imagine competition is tough.

I've seen a number of turntables these days that have BT outputs to connect to BT enabled gear, speakers, etc. as well. Brave new world.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

In the UK, dealer Richer Sounds currently list 235 passive speakers against 62 active. B&O were too quick to abandon the passive market.... just imagine how they could have kept a market presence with an updated passive speaker like the S45/ S45.2.

I don't remember the s45 being particularly popular among the hifi unwashed at the time, what would be different now?

Ban boring signatures!

That may be true, but the S45 still stands comparison with any current competitors offering ..... and does not need sub woofer assistance. S45 or not, B&O lost market presence by, for the most part, dropping passive speakers.

I think one of the main reasons B&O dropped passive speakers was that in order to achieve good performance in the form factors/size they wanted style wise they were pretty much forced to go active. You can play games with bass boost and extension you just can't with passives, and B&O moved away from the idea of selling components that worked with other brands and systems and went even more insular, with all B&O systems/setups. I don't personally think that was the best idea but it's the direction they took.

Have previously posted in this topic but have been giving some serious thought and I’d like Bang & Olufsen to make me a 55-inch BeoVision in the design of the previous BeoVision 11/14 with a aluminium acoustic lens below the screen like on the BeoVision 9 available with a motorised floor stand that has something like a 8” 160 watt driver in the bass (maybe with built in google assist)

and

BeoLab 3 replacements of the same design with same acoustic lens of the BeoLab 18’s, the speakers case in wood and with built in WISA
