Good evening guys,
I would like to ask you something. It may have been already answered but despite my search i didn't managed to gather a clear answer still valid today.
I'm seeing more and more Beosound 9000 to sell with defective laser unit but at affordable price (it seems, little under 500€). Some of them dont play, other stops after few seconds, one did have the glass panel detached but no more details… Etc…
I'm slowly becoming interested in those and have been lurking them lately. But I can't figure out which one will be a funny repair exercice and which one just a nightmare or an impossible project.
As far as i know MK1 is not advised.
Considering I will not use ML or N.Music (just AE on A.Aux) are MK2 laser unit easy to find? Are they costly? And how difficult are they to replace? Could a BS3000 Laser unit be fitted or is it a stupid idea? And is they're some things i dont imagine I should be aware of?
To be honest that would be more for decorative purpose and A.Aux In use mostly. But I hate things that dont work and I'd like to see the CD part move and play.
Thanks to anybody who would help.
MK1 and early MK2's use CDM12.4 lasers, which can be still be found.
Later MK2's and MK3 uses VAM1250 which are very hard to find, other than buying new from B&O(if they will sell you one).
BS3000 uses the same laser as MK3's, so the laser can be interchanged.
If at one point a MK1 or early MK2 have been in for repair of laser, B&O might have upgraded the drive to MK3 with the newest laser(hard to find).
So... It is kind of a miss and hit, but they are fun to restore:) I have done 5 of them, only had to buy 1 new kit original, but they are 300EUR approx.
I have not attached the glass on one, so I dont know what bonding glue to use, to get it correct.

Thank you Weebyx,
Is there a serial number limit or something to separate early MK2 form late ones ?
First BS 9000 MK1 have CDM laser 12.6 nightmare to find working laser unit and they are not so reliable!
SW 1.2 and 1.3 type 2521 do not have RDS !!
Late BS 9000 MK1 ( SW 1.4 and on ..) ( type 2526... ) have RDS and cd VAM 1205 ( CDM 12.4 ) easy to find on Ebay and they are quite reliable.
BS900 MK2 have RDS + CD radio text , VAM 1250..and so on..hard to find any good working fake one on Ebay or any other page.

I do not know that, I have taken the chance on the MK1/2/3's I have fixed :)
Some of them just need a good clean of the laser, and possible the sledge optocoupler if the sledge runs "funny"
Weebyx,
the sledge optocoupler is PCB 9 ?
How do you get there - by removing chassis top plate as in point 5 of Service Manual ?

Yes, perform steps 1-5, but be careful with the round disc running in the optocoupler thingy. It must not be bend or anything, I use a microfiber cloth or compressed air to remove any big dust things.
Off course with the following "on your own risk because of static electricity" warning, and so on. I have never had any issues with that though ;)
Thanks to all those who replied,
I can see clearly now and will keep an eye on second hand adds.
All the best.
I have opened a chassis top plate and looked at mine optocoupler, there was some dust ( see picture) but all holes in the disk were not covered
By that occasion I noticed also a battery ( see picture) which sooner or later will have to be replaced. Did you had a chance to replace battery ?

I have never replaced battery in BS9000. I doubt that it will need changing before the whole unit(CPU PCB) dies though.
