Good morning from Athens Greece.new to this forum i bought from ebay a beocord 1600 reel to reel in very good condition ,looks like new,but......first of all the internal amp seems not to work i connect a pair of speakers but no sound, connecting to my stereo i have sound but the quality is no good not highs at all i try to record but the result was bad with too much distortion, anyway i download the service manual and now i will try to fix it i have a basic knowllege of electronics so i will give it a try.if you have any ideas what to look first it wiil be very helpfull. in the service manual there is a B&O part number for the transistors but i dont know the exasct number of them if i want to replace any of them.
If can any one help? thanks
First of all, get new belts and a new tape, then check all the tape head and guides for wear, do the mechanical adjustment and try again, go after the failure if still there. I recommend to change all the electrolytic capacitors anyway, in the manual there is a table with the part number and transistor types, but dont rely on it, check the markings on the transistor(s) you want to change.
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
thank you very much
Today i finished changing all the capacitors.the result....everythings seems to be ok,no more distortion, recording is perfect, the only ones i did not change were the 2 2000μf 25 volts big white i couldnt find 2000 i put 2200 μf but after 5 minutes i heard a strong hiss coming from the speakers,i swithced off and put back the old ones and every thing became normal like before,by the way these big WICON they write plain negative so when you look from above the 2 feet one has a small circle at the base the other is plain,so i think the one with the circle is the positive + the empty is the negative -. Is that write ?? also from the schematic diagram looks to be so the polarity,i say this because in this way i put the 2200 μf .Anyway the WICON with a capacitometer i get 1910 μf is that ok? any sugestions if you know to relace them or leave them...thank you very nuch fo your help.
Could you post a pic of the new capacitor, your Beocord 1600 is different from my 1200. The 1910 uF should be OK. the value of the new capacitor is also OK but maybe the new one is a bipolar capacitor

the new one is a normal not bipolar very common 2300 μf 35 volt you can see the old and the new which is very small comparing to the old
connecting to external speakers using the internal amp the sound is very good and clear ,now i connected to my amp from the back socket and sound is not good ,the left channel has a very loud noise lots of distortion ,i think i have to check the cable first and see

the old and the new one
If your cable and the plugs and jacks are clean and in good condition, check the switch assemblies (clean and working)
today i found the problem i found out that one capacitor was soldered the wrong way in the 8004049 board which is one of two identicals i replace it and also i noticed 2 transistors tr3 and tr4 were burnt i replaced but stil i have the problem i can not record in the left channel also the left vu meter is not working. but no success.....now i am checking and comparing the 2 identical boards to find what else is wrong...any way i hope to find the problem. so the recorder plays ok only right channel but not records on the left channel. bad luck !!
Finally i fixed it last night and i am very happy now. plays-records veryy well.
today i bought another one !!!!! the same model,it is in good condition i noticed that in play mode only left cchannel is playing from the other i have a very strong hiss-noise like the the tape is not recorded i check with several tapes still the same,so can you suggest where to look first. i opened and is very clean inside probably never been opened before.when i press only the 1-4 button i hear the strong hiss no other sound , with the 3-2 there is music but not stereo. i belive is something wrong with the
pcb-board-module-8004049
Today i found that the problem is a transistor ,TR8 transistor which is the BC159B .i want to find out if i can replace with a BC149B as i have 3 of them i noticed that they have small differences .is it dangerous to replace with one of these ?otherwise i have to find the same one.. Thank you

( Is your first name Harry or Harryparos?)
Anyway, I am also a lucky owner of a BC 1600, as well as a BC 1200; one of the differences between these two is how to connect to an external amplifier ( the 1200 has no internal amp) . I usually do the playback of my tapes on the 1200 but I I would like to hear the 1600 over my BM1200 amp.
To which socket did you insert the the 5-pin DIN ?
( I also refer to my posts on a thread pertaining to the BC 1200)

Good morning,my first name is Harry, yes you can use the input if you see from the back the second from the right. The first is if you want to tape from an amp or cd or another tape rec. best regards,Harry
Hi Harry,
Thank you for your (early) reply: perfect playback now!
Kind regrds,
Hi followers of this thread,
In my latest post I was to rash as to the playback: I only listened a few seconds to it, that is to short to notice that it actually sounded like there is a blanket wrapped around the tweeter, very poor high, enough low. is there a way to boost the high?
Azimuth correctly adjusted?Tapeheads clean?
Martin
I should have checked this in the first place.
Thanks
Strangely enough when playback directly over hims own amp, speakers connected, the sound is much better, although not quite brisk and there is also too much hum. Likewise activating the “high” slider makes no audible difference.
How come?
