Hi all, I had a recent problem with my Beolab 4000's, One speaker would power on but with no audio, if I pushed the power button in - out then there was sound for a second or two then it would go off again, So over Christmas I decided to strip the speaker apart. I noticed that the black foam was slightly sticky. After reading up of the dreaded foam rot (inner foam not driver foam) I decided to strip them and remove all the foam.

[

Upon inspection it seams that the foam may have become conductive and started shorting the speaker. Not sure if the speaker was powering off to protect itself. After removing the foam I checked the boards and all looked good with no signs of corrosion on the contacts. I cleaned all the boards with some contact cleaner and used a very soft toothbrush to remove as much of the foams tacky residue as I could.

I then powered the speakers on with no inner foam and they worked perfect Big Smile

Does anyone know where I can get some foam to replace the old ??

Thanks

The problem you have seen with the foam is common with the older units.

All Beolab 4000's which have the newer foam which is white in colour.

Hi Keith, I believe the units are the Mk1's as they did have the black foam not white. Just need to find some replacement foam, I think using them without the foam may cause the wires to rub and potentially fray against the boards due to vibrations and also may rattle in the cabinet.

You could do as suggested and purchase a set of foam ready cut on EBay or just get yourself a sheet of 10mm foam and cut out your requirements.

You will need the foam replaced in the Beolab 4000 as it affects the reproduction of the sound.

Thanks Keith I have found some 20mm high density antistatic foam sheets on Ebay, think these should be OK and I'll have a go at cutting my own. The other speaker still has the foam intact so I can make a template of that.
