I have a Beosound 9000 and have it connected to a set of 8000 speakers. A little while back the remote stopped working and many trials have led to the position that the IR receiver board has failed on the 9000.

The 8000's are connected to the 9000 powerlink out plugs.

Yesterday I acquired a Beolab 3500 Mark 1 and have connected this directly to the 9000 using the ML cable.

With the 3500 only plugged in, the manual volume buttons on the 9000 don't work anymore, but I have full functionality of the 9000 via the Beo4 using the 3500 as the IR interface. Great. Finally able to operate by remote.

But then I plug the 8000's back in and I cannot control the volume of the 8000's from the remote. I can manually adjust volume to the 8000's from the 9000 buttons, but this does not alter the 3500. So basically I can control the 3500 volume and the functions of the 9000 from the remote, but I can not alter the volume of the 8000's.

Reading the manual for the 3500's and the 9000 it appears that it is possible to run the three speakers and 9000 in the same room, but I don't know how to program the remote to do this.

I've tried a number of options on the 3500 using the L.Opt settings on my Beo4 remote. 5 and 6 will not operate the CD player at all, but 1 through 4 operate all functions of the CD player except the volume of the connected speakers.

I've seen a 3500 setup to a 9000 via ML before and the 3500 was able to control the main room speaker volumes, even though in that case the 3500 was in another room.

One issue I'm going to have is that I can't talk to the 9000 via remote so I have no way to set that into any other mode. Could this be the issue? Any way to set the 9000 into a different mode using on board controls?

Can you offer any help please.

Are you sure that the BS9000 has not been set to A.OPT 0?  It does this automatically when no powerlink speakers are connected.

Try disconnecting ML (and the BL3500) and set the BS9000 to A.OPT 1 with the BL8000s connected. Then see if it is controllable directly by IR.

It may also be worth checking that your Beo4 is not in LINK MODE.  Have a look at page 92 of this manual: https://beointegration.com/uploaded/EN-BeoLink-handbook-v1-9.pdf

Thanks Guy, so therein lies an issue. The IR receiver on my 9000 has failed  which is a primary reason for wanting the 3500 to control it. I can't talk to the 9000 by remote. I wonder if there is a button combination that you can set the options from the onboard control panel of the 9000.

You mentioned 'many trials' that lead you to believe the IR board has failed - so can I assume that the trials included my two suggestions above?  I just wanted to be sure before looking for alternative control solutions!

From your description the system seems to be behaving as I would expect (albeit with IR board failure and/or as if BS9000 was in A.OPT 0.)

AFAIK in an ML system there is no way to control main room volume from a link room - but you said you have seen such a setup working before which is strange!

One solution could be to set up a Beolink Active 1636 in the same room as the BS9000.

Connect the Active to the BS9000 with ML cable, add an IR Sensor (hockey puck type) to the Active and also connect both BL8000s to the Active. Then you'd be controlling the whole thing as if from a link room.

Yes, been going on for a few weeks now. When I got the 9000 the seller said he hadn't used the remote. More's the point in that I think it didn't work. So I took my remote to a mates place and operated everything in his house perfectly. Then I bought his remote home and tried it on my 9000 to no effect. With the help of a few blokes here I tried a number of different programming options using my Beo4 but never once did I get a light flash to indicate my 9000 receives commands. I've since purchased another later model Beo4 and it's also the same. Recently checked both of my Beo4's on a 9000 Mark III and they all worked fine.

And today, by plugging in the ML cable between the 3500 and my 9000 Mark1, both of my remotes are working perfectly.

Do you think if I follow the instructions on P92 and input the code, that this won't mess up my current programming?

No, you are safe to try this as it does not effect the controlled equipment, only the remote.  Simply repeat the process to revert the Beo4 to normal.

Carry out the procedure in another room to your B&O equipment if you don't want to inadvertently switch stuff on and off.

Thanks Guy. So if you have a 3500 setup in another room, I was pretty sure that you can control the speaker volume in the main room as well as the 3500 volume. The 3500 User Guide alludes to this a anumber of times also.

On my two later model remotes I did the 2002 thing and both were already in Link Off mode. I turned them both on and then both off.

BUT...

On my older remote that come with the 9000, I go into config and then 2002 and nothing happens at all. Seems a different command is needed for the older remote.

I don't think that the older Beo4s will go into link mode.

With reference to the BL3500 User Guide: Where it states 'control the main room source' it basically means everything except the volume/sound controls.

One anomaly relates to using the BL3500 in an older MCL system - with this system the audio was distributed at speaker level.  Hence adjusting volume in link rooms can effect the volume in a main room even when using an active speaker.  This is of no help in your situation.

I would try the 'Beolink Active' option that I mentioned above, or get the BS9000's IR board fixed!

Yep, I think a new IR board is on the cards. There's a place here in Melbourne who can do it.

Once the IR is working, can you see any reason why the 3500 cannot operate with the 9000 and a pair of 8000's in the same room.

I like the 3500 hanging on the wall giving a bit of background sound in my office, and then when you want to punch it, just lift the volume and the 8000's come into play.

In your experience, with the 9000 in the correct mode, will the 3500 control all three volumes?

It's not a neat solution!  Basically your remote will be controlling both the BS9000 and the BL3500 independently (i.e via the two seperate IR sensors), but at the same time.  You could experience volume mis-match between the 8000s and the 3500.

If you still want to use the BL3500, then it could be worth setting it up in L.OPT 4 and then controlling it from a separate Beo4 (set to permanent LINK mode).  A similar setup is shown on page 10 of the reference document that I linked to earlier.
