Being fortunate to live in the massive metropolis of Houston, Texas, I found a pair of RedLine 140s for $25.  1 of them needs new woofers, so I thought I would get both of them refurbished at the same time.  I have already found a shop I'm comfortable doing business with, and have found an outift on ebay that provides the straps.  I'm left wondering who can replace the grille cloth?

Cheers

Follow Leslies good thread and do it yourself, why do you want to change the woofers, they normally only needs new surrounds.

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Good buy! You don't see that many RL140s in the country as they are quite large. Have you got the stands - these improve the sound as they can be a bit heavy sounding on the floor. As Soren says, follow Leslie's excellent thread for the refurbishment. I think you intend to refurbish the woofers as finding new ones of exactly the same specification could be tricky.

I found one, I mean another oneSmile, including stands and changed the cloth in black with a slightly thinner fabric, replaced the filter caps (to be honest, I can't hear any differences, must be my aging ears) and the sound is brilliant and powerfull. The cabinet is as brandnew. I will post a picture later.... Btw, one speaker which has his own enclosure in the RL140 cabinet was defect and I found an exact (new) replacement with the same dimensions and specs.

Hi Everyone,

Thought I was set up to receive a notification of any replies to the thread.  Hope you all had a great New Year's Eve!

Sorry if my terminology is a bit off re: woofers vs. surrounds; never attempted a project like this before, but I will definitely check out Leslie's thread.  All I know is that one of them makes a 'rasberry' or 'bronx cheer' type of sound on any bass notes.  Haven't investigated further.

Leslie, do you work for a steak dinner and beer??

Unfortunately, no stands came with them.  Keeping my eyes open for a pair.  Wall mounts would be even nicer.

Leslie, those look New In Box!  Please shoot me a PM.

Found an electronics repair shop down the street that has excellent web reviews.  I was shocked when the estimate came in at $400 to redo the surrounds and I think replace 1 woofer in the RL140s.  Am I being a cheapskate, or does this sound reasonable to you learned scholars?  This would not include the grille cloth.

Leslie, guess I need to visit with you re: some suitable black (vs grey) grille cloth.  Looks like the straps are readily available on ebay for ~ $25.

Cheers

Sounds a little expensive to me. Does the driver really need replacing? I would be sceptical as to what they might put in its place! Talk to Martin to see what he can do bear in mind he has had a lot of experience with these awkward to repair drivers!

I will make an estimate how much I paid for the caps, foam rings and cloths if you're interested!

Well, I couldn't wait to hear them, so I paid the man and just got em back.

WOW

I am hearing details missing from my S75s, which I thought sounded pretty good, especially considering they were designed way, way before the electronica I've been listening to.

I will post before and after pics once Mr. Leslie works his magic!  Just got the straps in from Iconic AV - Thanks if you're on here.

OK as you can expect for $25 they looked pretty rough.  I will give the cabinets a thorough cleaning - I think a toothbrush will reach the crevices.  Any thoughts on something to make them 'pop' just a bit?  Perhaps an auto detailing product like Mother's back to black?

Thanks to all who have offered input and just been along for the ride.  I am having so much fun with this.

Good to hear my friend! Will give you a call when I'm in Houston.

I dismantled the whole speakerunit to give them a good clean. You have to do that anyway for reclothing. Looking forward to meet youSmile But business first....

Indeed Sir, very much looking forward to meeting!  The cabinets really are in rough shape: nicks and scratches, even a water stain Sad

Currently they are set up in my office, on kickstands in the corners of the room, so once we re-grille and apply the straps, they will look new from the front at least (which is all that is visible)!

The bass response is remarkable in this position!  Growing up, my Dad had them on the floor stands initially, then on the wall mounts (rear surround duty).  I don't remember the bass ever being that responsive.  It must be the positioning.

I sure would like to hear a pair of MS150s, just for comparison.  After completely sorting out the 8000 system, those are next Smile
