I finally got hold of a Beogram 7000 for my Beosystem 7000. It was advertised as being without a stylus, so I was happy to find a MMC2 inside it, when I picked it up. The chap simply didn´t know what he was selling.
Well, after a good clean I fired it up, and it works great. However, the sound was disorted, so I swapped stylus with my Beogram 5005 which has a MMC1 playing at 1.2 gram. Sound was still disorted!
When I cleaned the Beogram 7000 I noticed, that the stylus weight was set to maximum. I then tried to set the weight back to that, and then it plays crisp and clear. The scenario is the same with the MMC1, which I know is good, so it can´t be due to "hard rubber" in the MMC2. The weight scale must be off; but how is that checked and/or corrected?
I do not (yet) own a stylus weight.

Can the weight inside the tone arm come loose?
I´ve ordered a stylus weight to get clarification.
The BG7000 had a built-in RIAA amplifier whereas the BG5005 doesn’t. So if you’ve connected both to the same phono input, then that explains the distortion.
The BG7000 is connected to a Beomaster 7000 - the BG5005 to a Beomaster 5000. I am aware of the differences on the RIAA part, thanks ;)
I didn´t swap out the BG´s, I swapped the stylus, and the issue remains. It seems like the tonearm weight doesn´t work correct on the BG7000. The MMC1/2 works great on the BG5005 at 1.2g., where it needs maximum weight on the BG7000 to sound okay-ish.
You clearly need to check the stylus weight - here is a diagram of the arm structure which may help though.

I have tested two different MMCs (MMC2 and MMC5) on a same beogram 7000, both are old and iit's mpossible to know how much years of use.
Visually there are structural differences : Cantilevers don't look the same. And The cantilever on the MMC5 has a different angle than the angle of the MMC2.
There is a weight incomprehension :
The MMC2 is said to be specified to being set at 1 gram, but I have distorsion if not set up to 1,8 g.
What do you think, is it dying ? Do I have to trust the measure on the arm ?

Cantilevers are different. MMC2 is crystal, MMC5 is aluminium.Angle should be the same, so perhaps the suspension is bad in one cartridge. This can usually be repaired by one of the specialsts.The tracking force dial should be calibrated if in doubt. Use a tracking force gauge.
