Does anyone know why I am only getting PCM 2.0 audio input from my SPDIF signal into BS3?

My current setup is ATV HDMI -> LG C9 optical -> BS3. I only get PCM2.0.

I have tried PS4 optical -> BS3. I only get PCM 2.0. (This rule out the problem lies with LG tv output)

If I connect ATV HDMI -> BS3. I get PCM 7.1 input no problem.

So the question is:

1) SPDIF can only output 2.0 signal? (which I don't think so)

2) BS3 cannot receive multichannel signal from SPDIF? (I think this is the answer, but would like to confirm)

3) My cables doesn't transmit multichannel signal properly? ( toslink optical cable -> converter -> SPDIF coaxial)

I cannot use HDMI as audio input since LG doesn't support HDMI audio out, only HDMI ARC.

Thank you for your input.

Your ATV is probably set to decode the sound to PCM (maybe the Auto setting is selected).

And SPDIF can only transmit 2 channels in the PCM format.

Have a look at the settings of the ATV - set it to DD, which the BSys3 can handle.

Could a BS3 use the hdmi input from the TV and only use the powerlink outputs for the particular AV section, using no BS3 display?

Not sure what you mean/want to achieve?

Do you want sound only from the ATV connected to the BSys3?

If, yes =

1: Use the AV cintrol before pushing the Source name (the one that you assigned to the input) e.g. AV-DTV

2: Start the playback with the Source name and then use P.Mute to turn off the screen.

Please clarify for further suggestions......do you - maybe - think of a non-B&O tv connected to a BSys3 via HDMI???

From OP. "My current setup is ATV HDMI -> LG C9 optical -> BS3. I only get PCM2.0.

From the doghouse. ATV -> LGTV, LGTV HDMI - > BS3 HDMI input "X", A/V Port "Y", BS3 to BLSpeakers. NO B&O TV or PMUTE

Will that work?

I am not rhat familiar with the sound (output) settings of the LG.

But I suppose that yuo’d have options there similar to those of the ATV..

Whether the LG has an option similar to P.Mute I don’t know.

You might have better options, if you’d use an HDMI Extractor and connect the ATV to the LG for picture and route the sound directly into the BSys3.

Be patient - maybe someone else on the forum has better ideas.

Yes, if I use HDMI as audio input than it should work, the problem is LG doesn't have option to audio out thru HDMI, only HDMI arc, which LG and BS3 don't communicate.

Yes, this is what I am going to try next. I will see if can find a HDMI ARC compatible splitter so that I can connect both PS4 and ATV directly to LG and the have the audio split to its own HDMI.

But to be honest, I am really happy with BS3 even with PCM2.0 "simulate" to 5.1 by BS3. I find my movie experience more enjoyable than my previous non-B&O amp. Smile
