Wanting to take my girlfriend to Norway for about 4/5 days in January. Looking at staying near Oslo Gardermoen and possibly as far as Lillehammer. Where would you recommend staying. We would like to rent a cabin or something similar rather than hotel.

Sorry to see that no one has answered you! Did you already travel to Norway or are you still going this month? If you're going to Lillehammer you can rent a cabin a bit north of the city, in Øyer/Hafjell (ski resort) http://www.hafjell.no/en/
If you want to try something out of the ordinary, there are some treetopcabins between Gardermoen and Lillehammer. http://tretopphytter.no/english/home/
If you're staying a night or two in, or nearby, Oslo, I'd go for a hotel in the city.
I live in Hamar (by the lake Mjøsa) between Gardermoen and Lillehammer, if you need a car during your stay I have one you can borrow for free, just let me know :)
