I have one of these on which I cured the sticky lift mechanism and it now runs OK at the right speeds But..
The stylus seems to swing like a pendulum from 6 o' clock to 7 as the record tracks. Occasionally the record gets stuck and if I push the arm gently to centre the stylus, the sound levels balance up. Tracking weight is set to 1.5g and anti skate minimum - no tension on the spring.
It seems as if the horizontal swing is slightly impaired. Looking underneath, there is a wire which pushes a slider to the center which seems to have to lift up a plate which operates the return mechanism. This seems odd as this entire mass has to be moved by the stylus and would impair movement. Should this be lubricated or super clean?
Has anyone seen this stylus swing before? Am I looking in the right place? Perhaps the lateral bearings are sticky
Thanks
Thanks for the reply. I'll clean it up and report back
Cleaning up the rails and plastic part has improved things but the stylus still swings from side to side. It has been suggested that perhaps the cartridge suspension has failed?
Thank you. I think the bearing needs lubricating.
Hopefully someone has done this before and its possible without dismantling the whole arm.
ProGram:Before you do this, can you post a video with the starting cycle and playing?
I think the files are too big. Is there anywhere else I can send them?
You might post in on Youtube and post the link here
I don't have a youtube account.
The start sequence is smooth without any sign of binding.
It was completely siezed when I got it, so maybe I have missed some gunk near the bearing?
I have now swapped out my MMC20EN from my 4002 and that does the same. The stylus 'swings' from 17:00 to 19:00 as the arm tracks. At certain points in the record, the record(s) gets stuck.
I put the MMC20E in the 4002 and it does not 'swing' . The 'sticking' must therefore be something to do with the left/right swing of the arm. No records mis -track
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Does the tonearm swing freely or does it have a sticky feel?Perhaps it was once lubricated with something bad.
Martin
Hi Martin,
Thank you for the reply.
It seems to be free but obviously something isn't right. It would not take much to prevent the arm from moving.
It appears as if the arm is standing still until the record revolves a few times, bends the stylus to the point where the arm overcomes its inertia and swings across to catch up.
Could it be anything to do with the clutch mechanism at the base of the arm near the anti skate? I don't really understand what that clutch mechanism is for.
(PS do you still have the 24V bulbs for the 4002 speed selector/ arm? If so please send a PM with details)
The saga continues.
Disappointingly, there is no real difference. Some records still get stuck, others play fine. It can be anywhere on the record but seems to get worse as the arm moves to the centre.
I disassembled the arm, cleaned all 13 ball bearings - 3 on top an 10 below and everything around. I don't recommend this!
I would like to check I have re-assembled the bearing correctly as the manual isn't clear to me.
The attached picture shows the top of the arm mount. You can see the centre spindle is not round (looks like it was done in the factory) so you cannot remove the brass washer under the E clip to totally disassemble the arm. Under the brass washer is a plastic retainer with 3 recesses which hold the 3 top ball bearings. It looks as if the bearings should sit under the plastic piece, which is where I have put them. Can anyone confirm this?
Any other thoughts on why the arm should stick would be appreciated.
