The CD player of my Beosound 3200 keeps hanging. It starts to play fine, but a certain time it hangs and plays through and it hangs again and on the display you can see it changing numbers from track 2 to track 1 and back. Then the CD just stops turning.
I can change to other tracks but there happens the same: it stops after a while.
I cleaned it with 96% alcohol twice but that did not work.
What can I do to solve this?Does the laser needs to be replaced? Is that easy to by by myself? If so what is the best place to buy one?Or is this not the problem, and is there another solution?
Would the laser of a working Beosound 2300 fit? I have that to use as a donor but that would be a pity as it is fully functioning.
I hope you can help me as I want to spin CD's again. Thanks in advance.
Hi,
Most likely a laser default, yes. To be sure you may try to get the Service Manual and enter Test Mode to check for any laser error. If it happens to be the reason, changing the laser head is not complicated. It need precision and patience but its very doable. Lot of tutorials around about this.
The difficulty will be to find a replacement laser. I dont know what type the laser from the 3200 is, you may find it by searching in the forum.I doubt the 2300 will work. Once you have the laser pickup ref, it can be easy to find if its a common one like the VAM 1205 or it can be more difficult to source.
Good luck.
Thanks for pointing about the test mode. I wasn't aware of that. The manual was a bit cryptic for me, so I hope I did it right.I went into testmode, pressed TM 61 Focus on and started to play the CD. After a while the CD stopped and said Error 37.
Looking that up it says: 37 Selection error
Did I do the test right? Am I testing the laser with TM 61 Focus on?What does Selection error mean?I tried googling it but no luck
If you managed to enter test mode and get a result, you did it right!
Now, knowing what test is relevant and how to read the result is beyond my knowledge now, because I dont own a 3200.
I would say :
- Run all tests one by one and note every error, you should be able to see if errors are only CD related or if it's anything else.- Once you have the error code, guess for the obvious (meaning) ones and decide if they could be laser hardware related or not, like focus for instance.- Also do some research on the laser type. For instance a BS9000 MKII laser cost 20€ and it is well know replacing it will solve a lot of side problems. If your laser is that price range, try your luck and just go for it.- To my knowledge, out of the blue faults on that generation of equipment is often common to many users, never isolated. Once you have a precise full test mode report, you should be able to find clever help, be it at the least here on Beoworld.
Sorry not to be more helpful than those general rules.
Thanks for the excellent advice.I was thinking the same way as I already ran TM 67 (CD starts playing) and it came with the very same error 37 code (Selection error).I will run the other tests as well to see if I am getting the same results.
Does anyone else (who owns a Beosound 3200) ever had the same error 37 code and knows what it means? Or does anyone else knows what the Selection error means?Does it mean I need a new laser?
The other tests does not come up with the same results as they are very simple tests to point the laser to the beginning/end of the CD. Or to get the motor spinning.
So both the TM61 Focus ON and the TM67 The CD starts playing tests come with the error 37 message: Selection error. It seems the machine doesn't know which track to play. For a short while it seems to be doubting between 2 tracks as you can see the next number quickly switching with the current number. Can this issue be solved by a new laser?
Thanks for the final diagnosis. What would be the best place to buy it? Any recommendations?Ebay came up with this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OPTICAL-LASER-LENS-PICKUP-for-BEOSOUND-3200-Player/281097359340
Is this the right one? Or are there variations?
Feddo:Is this the right one? Or are there variations?
The part you want to buy looks like this yes but to be sure it's the right one you need to open your Beosound first.
- Look for tutorials to take out the CD mechanism for similar form factor Beosounds.- Once you have the full mechanism, note the reference (often VAMXXXX). See what you can find on it.- Look for generic tutorials about changing the laser. The idea is to disconnect the orange triangular ended ribbon cable where the actual ref of the laser is printed. Google/eBay it and see what you can find.- Eventually buy the part and proceed to change.
I think the most important thing is to gauge your ability to do the change and how much it will cost and compare to the second hand price of another BS3200. I know it's a shame to have a good looking B&O non-working device. But it's up to you to know.

Thanks for the reflections.Getting a new unit is not good for me as I burned so much albums to the hard disc, but there are probably also ways to transfer these to a new set (hopefully). For me it is a challenge to fix the laser myself. Just need to get a torx screwdriver according to this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcrPJcZOwfg
Thanks for the link. The laser of my spare 2300 moves along a straight line so I could use that one as well, but it is just a shame to damage it just for that part. So I think I will order a new laser. Also because I don't know how long the old 2300 laser will last.
Thanks for your excellent help.
I think you can't swap the lasers.
I've asked about compatibility between 2300 and a dead 3000 I have and the answer was "no".The link provided was just to show you how the guts looks like and some experiences about laser changes.
Thanks for that as the link says otherwise. But I was planning to buy a new one anyway as it is a shame to ruin a working B&O machine just for one certain part.
