Beolab 11 snap-on cover question

I noticed the silver covers on the side are connected by a cable that connects to the main body. I removed one of the covers and also ended up detaching the cable of the cover from the body. 

Question is, does the cable have any function?

Thanks. Not sure if it is a placebo or not, but looks like some distortion at high volumes I had before is gone once I attached it. May be I moved something around that was touching the speaker cone...🤷🏽‍♂️🤞🏼
