Thanks all for this site. I inherited a non working Beogram 4004 from a friend of mine. I have replaced the 2 belts, cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled, the damper and solenoid mechanism. I did the adjustment on the damper to lower the tone arm and calibrated the tracking of the needle. The turntable now will play, but for only a minute or two. It seems like the needle follows the groves, until it starts to drift toward the optical arm. Then it just keeps repeating the same section of music. The tracking mechanism screw shaft does move at start up, and moving side to side, but does not move when the record is playing. It doesn't matter where on the record I drop the needle, it will only play a minute or two and then skip / repeat. Does anyone know why the tonearm is doing this, and if this could be a mechanical tracking fix, or an electronic one? I'm looking forward to listening to complete songs. Thanks!
It sounds like the linear tracking sensor is out of adjustment or the sensor lamp is burned out. You might also check the calibration on the stylus force. If the tracking sensor has a burned out lamp then the tone arm will lower onto a record. The record grooves will start moving the stylus and cantilever inwards but the tangential arm drive won't respond and advance. Eventually a limit of the stylus/cantilever will be reached and it will skip or bounce back to where it started. It is possible to damage and/or break the cartridge when this happens so don't attempt to play anymore records until you fix the problem.Remove the two platters and the belt. Then press play. The Beogram should think there is a record present and drop the arm where a 12 inch record starting position is. When the arm drops it should not move. If the tracking sensor is out of adjustment you might see the tangential drive motor start advancing the arm inwards. If the tracking sensor lamp is working you should see its glow at the base of the tonearm pivot. There are quite a few posts on Beoworld that show details of the various optical sensors in the Beogram 4004.

Burned tracking lamp is my guess.

Hi Franklin
Put on your Cantilever Protector if you got one.
Is it possible to move the Arm with the << and >> Buttons? Yes? Then the Motordriverbridge is ok.
An good Test would be to take of the Platter and the Belt so there is no spinning Platter that could snap of your Needle, and the Discdetection "thinks" there is a Record on the Platter, the Tonearm can be lowered.
Then start the Player as usual, after the Arm is dropping tick the Arm slightly firm to the Left, The Motor for the tangential Drive should spin now.
If not Martin has nailed the Mistake, look if there is some Light emitting from the tracking Mechanism.
If there is light and the Motor spins after ticking to the Left, the Mechanism is misaligned.
I hope you did not try to screw at the Mechanism to align it ;-)
Another mistake could be that the lowering Limit is aligned too high so the Tonearm could not go far enough to the Left because it "sticks" in the V Shaped grove on the Backside of the Tonearm.
Check these Points and we will see if you found something wrong.
A Picture of the Tonearm at the most Left Angle it goes would be helpful. Hope you know what I mean,
sorry for my bad English.....
Best Regards
