Depends on your needs. If you are OK with just wired then the M3 is an incredible value. If you want battery and don’t care about AirPlay then Beloit 17 is an excellent value. I actually don’t think you can buy any speaker that sounds as good as the M3 at the price, not even counting for the design or build quality.

B&O in my life 😊:

  • Beosound 1 with wireless dock (Portable)
  • Beosound Balance (Dining)
  • Beoplay H95 (Focused listening, travel)
  • Beoplay H9 (3rd gen) (retired)
  • Beoplay P6 (Portable)
  • Beotime wall clock (hallway entrance)
  • BMW X5 50i with B&O Audio Package (Commute/drive)

So the 17 doesn’t have airplay then? Does this mean I can’t use my iPhone or iPad to stream Deezer or Spotify?

You can stream music from your iDevice to the Beolit 17 using Bluetooth.

Same with my Beolit 15. Do it all the time from Spotify.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

Hi there, the M3/M5 are speakers for in house situ and can be paired to play in different rooms/positions. Either through Airplay or native B&O multiroom.

A2/Beolit 15/17 are true portable speakers to be used through bluetooth. Pairing can be done through the B&O app but only to same type of speaker (A2-A2).

Depending on your needs and willingness to invest, you might go for an M3 for inhouse and an A1 for outdoors. Even the entry level speakers are very good and from there you can expand your collection.

If only looking for one speaker: Beolit 17 for bluetooth and M5 for inside, or better get an Beosound 2 secondhand!

Hope this helps

Another aspect to take into account, is that the M3 and M5 do not need a smartphone to function.

A bluetooth/Airplay speaker is just an extension of your smartphone and plays whatever is playing on your phone. Stop it on your phone then the music on the speaker stops. Using Bluetooth the whole time has an effect on battery life.

Using the in-built Chromcast/ Deezer/TuneIn functionality the M5 and to a lesser extent M3 will continue to play once started even if you switch of the phone or leave. In fact you do not need to use a phone at all once set up.

I believe the advantage with the BeoLit 17 is that it charges faster than the BeoLit 15. The sound is really powerful and punchy and Bluetooth connection is rock solid even from a distance. Not sure of there is a difference in BT spec between the 15 and 17. If you don’t care about Multiroom and using your smartphone for Spotify etc the BeoLit 17 is an excellent choice. 24 hours battery, it can use the same usb c fast charging as your phone. The P6 is even more portable (I have one) and I often use it when traveling because it is a good speaker phone as well. However, for music the BeoLit 17 can be played louder and I like that you can just place the phone on the top.
