Hi all,
Going to buy a new BeoSound 2 next week but unsure whether to choose the first model without Google Assistant or the latest model with it. Only £100 price difference between the two, but are there actually any differences other than the inclusion of the assistant; for example sound quality, connections, bluetooth, airplay etc?
I already have Google products in my home including several minis and hubs. Also a complete Nest systems including Nest cams, smoke detectors and the Hello video doorbell all linked to the Google Home app on my iPhone. With these products in use, would I still be able to control the BS2 (version 1) by voice, and would there be any need to upgrade to the later version?
Any and all comments appreciated please. Thanks in advance, Simon.
B&O products are V1-32, BS2, H95, E8 and an Essence remote.11-46 now replaced with Sony A90J 65”, Sony HT-A9, Sony UBP-X800M2 and Sony SRS-NS7.
My experience has always been to get the latest version. In my case, I bought 2 generations of BL6000s, they were supposedly unchanged, the 2nd gen sounded better, lasted longer. I owned a BL 8000 mk2 and then BL8002, they were supposed to sound the same. There is no doubt the BL 8002 sounds better. I went from Beoplay H9i to H9 3rd gen with the voice assistant. Both Bluetooth and noise cancelling are better on the 3rd gen. I therefore went with the BS1 GVA. I seldom use GVA, but when I need to, it works perfectly for simple things. If it were me, I’d go with the latest. I am really impressed with the current gen of B&O products. The quality seems to be top notch.
My 2 cents worth.
B&O in my life 😊:
Hi The Beonix man,
not many know, but you can order the second version without Google assistent if you want.
the second version have a newer audio engine than the first one. thats meen it respons better on AirPlay 2 and chrome cast. And also is more ready for new function coming up. The second version is open for order in 2 different version. With or without Google.
:) good luck for your choice.
andybandy: not many know, but you can order the second version without Google assistent if you want.
To be fair, it's advertised on the Bang & Olufsen website :) There's the GA version and non-GA version. I have the non-GA.
I also have the first revision and it's absolutely fine with AirPlay 2 and Chromecast - better and more responsive than my Edge!
My only point would be, if you go for a Natural or Bronze, just make sure you do get the newer BeoSound 2 as both those colours came with the first revision.
Thanks guys.
Curious what colours people have chosen? I note there is a new brushed finish available but not sure what I think looking at photos. Looks a little too brushed to me in an awkward direction. Maybe someone purchased one and can comment further? I am also a fan of bronze when it comes to sculptures so this colour could be an interesting addition to the home. However, I am not sure that its the same bronze you would find on typical sculptural works of art; it looks much more darker to me so wouldn't match. Anyway, fun to think about it before making the purchase.
Anyone bought the Balance over the BeoSound 2 or maybe have both and can make a sound comparison? I've not seen it or heard it but on photos alone it's just not appealing to me at all. I heard the BeoSound 2 several years ago at a dealer and was blown away by the sound and the shape and design is pure B&O to me. Excited to purchase.

I have the naturally brushed A1 and would probably agree that I'm not sure I'd want it on something as big as the BeoSound 2. It's quite obviously brushed.
I have the Infantry Green BeoSound 2.Don't buy something if you don't like the look of it. It's not going to blow you away - if you want that go for an Edge or A9. Far far better than a BeoSound 2. My A9 blows the doors of the BeoSound 2. I'd prefer a pre-loved A9 over a BeoSound 2 any day.
I actually bought the Beoplay A9 over the BS 2about a year and a half ago. I then bought a BS Stage to use only for music. If there was a Balance, I might have gotten the Balance instead. I did extensive listening of the BS 2 and feel the Stage, A9 and Balance would likely outperform it. I haven’t heard the most recent BS 2 or Balance. I have a new BS 1 in Anthracite and it sounds OK, not as good as the M5 (which I also have), but looks amazing and is also battery powered. Perhaps the BS 1 and 2 sacrifice some performance for the looks. To me the BS 2 looks amazing.

I know you are a huge fan of the A9 and I have been considering that too. The appeal of the A9 would be the choice of covers, several of which would really add something aesthetically to my home but not necessarily the sound. I say this because I live in a small dwelling and simply wouldn't need the power of the A9 to fill such a small lounge. It is a beast, well liked with top reviews I know.
If you are saying that the A9 offers a better quality sound (I know this is so subjective) compared with the BS2 at similar volume levels, say 50-60, then that's an important point and perhaps I should reconsider. I really do like the designs of both and am surprised you say the BS2 doesn't blow you away but then its not going to against something like an A9 I suppose.
Very difficult selecting speakers as we all hear and like different things. I always find it tricky to explain the kind of sound that appeals to me but over the years I've loved the BL4000s, BL8000s, BL3s and BL9s and purchased them as a result. Does that help give a better idea of the kind of sound I like? I suppose I am drawn to a warm, well rounded, cosy and complete (sound that surrounds me) experience if that makes sense. I remember really liking the sound from the original BL4000s, that was just lovely to my ears but I couldn't afford them at the time.
Any further comments helpful along with which model of A9 you would recommend. Thanks again.

The A9 is a huge step above the BeoSound 2. Fills a massive room and has a much wider sound (or appears that way).

Any other thoughts about the type of sound and experience you had from your extensive listening with the BeoSound 2? I'd be interested in how you would describe the sound and your overall listening experience? I have only ever heard it once. A few years ago when the BeoLab 50s came out I had arranged for a demo of them with a dealer near London. When I walked into the shop and heard the music playing I was quite literally blown away by what I was hearing. I commented how amazing the sound was. The owner said to me, "Simon, I haven't switched them on yet, that's the BeoSound 2 you're listening to." Hence, my instant love for this product - a natural love affair without any thought or discussion.
Recalling the above memory, I would add to the comment I just left Moxxey that the A9, impressive as it is, sounds like the big powerful speaker you would expect it to be given its shape and form. In contrast, the BeoSound 2 was interesting, captivating, shocked me and blew me away in the sense that I just didn't expect to hear what I did from that thing! I have always loved industrial designs too so the BS2 fits that bill more than the A9, which I would categorise more as a furnishing.

I'd try and listen yourself rather than trying to make a judgement from other people's experiences. What I'd like visually might differ fro someone else (I love the Edge, someone else on here said they completely disliked the design). Some people might love the boomy experience of the A9, others will prefer the BeoSound 2. You have to make that judgement yourself.
I found the Stage to be fairly average, for example, but others love it.
I hear John Lewis is opening up again from mid-May. Perhaps have a drive to Cribbs Causeway and see if they have the A9 v BeoSound 2 v Stage on display? They stock them all.
The many times I have heard the BS2, in the office and people’s home the sound is excellent. As a portable speaker, I can’t think of any better speaker. A colleague of mine for instance picked the BS 2 over a Devialet Phantom, which I believe is more powerful. I guess you can adjust the sound in the app, but it sounds ‘brighter’ than the A9 and the A9 also sounds more effortless for bass heavy music. I was OK with both the BS2 and A9, but my wife preferred the A9 and hence why we went with it. The most amazing thing to me about the BS2 is the amount of sound (full ness ) that comes out of such a small speaker and the fact you can place it anywhere. You definitely won’t regret it. I don’t think the reviewers do it justice because both people I know who own them love the BS2 and have audiophile quality gear in their home - it’s the only B&O product they own from what I know, so they bought it purely on value....not brand loyalty.

I have a Stage on a chest of drawers in my dining room. It looks pretty nice and really sound great even just as an audio system. It’s because the Stage is so good that I thought the Balance might be a better choice for audio quality over the BS2.

I have been looking at all the options including the Stage, Edge, Balance and A9 and this is where I am at so far. I have concluded that I don't really want to be spending Edge money for my requirements and if I were spending such a budget then I would add more funds and look at a pair of BeoLab speakers instead. Thus, the Edge can be eliminated.
While I haven't heard the Balance, the design just doesn't appeal to me at all. I find it very boring to look at so the sound is irrelevant since I need more than that. I want impressive sound quality and impressive looks. Hence, another elimination. This leaves the BeoSound 2, the Stage and the A9.
The A9 is certainly a product I could make work in my home. I have seen a skinny paint splash cover recently that would tie in with my curtains and decor in the lounge really well and make a great statement. The footprint is very big though and I would lose a whole corner if I did this, unless I wall mounted it but I'd then lose wall space, which is valuable in my small home. Not yet eliminated, more discussion needed that makes for good reading on the forum too hopefully!
This leaves the Stage then. Again, not heard it and going only from what people are discussing here. Jaffrey, its interesting you put this above the BeoSound 2 sound wise and I agree, given the price this is a refreshing read for me. Moxxey, you think the Stage is more average and I have a gut feeling if I heard it in real life I would be agreeing with you. No evidence to base this on and I'd need to hear it obviously but my sense is it wouldn't excite me too much. Jaffrey, really like what you said about your audiophile friends who own the BeoSound 2 and their experiences of it and Stan, its interesting to get a feeling of prices for the non-GA model these days. What could one pay? The best offer I can find without looking too hard is £1,280 for a non-GA model and £1,380 the GA model, both brand new. If you or others know where better prices could be had then do please drop me a message.
Now, with regards to the Stage, the problem here is that in due course I’ll be buying an LG wallpaper model TV and soundbar (W7/W8/W9 models) or whatever comes next. I find these more interesting than the B&O TV offers, which for me are far too overpriced now, don’t last the course and frankly take up too much space. I can’t think of any improvement over a wallpaper television with a neat sounder sitting underneath it which also has LG magic movement in the soundbar. So, sadly the Stage is probably up for elimination (maybe not quite their yet!!) because unless someone says otherwise, I can't see any value over an LG television that their own soundbar doesn’t offer for a small home such as mine.
Keep posting!

Stan: I use it for my office so an A9 would be overkill. If I’m truthful, the Bs2 is probably also overkill, but the bs1 did not impress me.

My A9 was in my office and after 5pm I could play it as loud as I liked, so really made full use!
BeoSound 1 didn't impress me either. I bought one from the B&O Bath store and kept it for days. There wasn't anything right about it. Didn't even feel portable either (you can move the BeoSound 2 around just as easily). BeoSound 1 just sounded like a cheap speaker. Wasn't worth the cash - no way near Stage level, for example!
I have already watched many of your videos on YouTube and they have been extremely helpful in my decision making. Thanks for taking the time to do these and offering such great product reviews. I will likely visit your local dealer at some point too because I often visit Holland with my friend and we always base ourselves in Utrecht as its pretty central for where we like to visit.
One of your reviews about the BeoSound 2 was compelling and it seemed you really liked it. This is the video where it is placed on the corner table next to the BeoSound 1.
I read with much interest your opinion about the Stage and it might be that I buy one of these in the future in addition to the BeoSound 2. If it had some B&O magic movement I would be much more interested I think. This is where the soundbar that comes with the LG wins me over as it has the 2 speakers that rise up either side, which still gives me product excitement. As impressive as the Stage might be sound wise, without any magic it could be just another soundbar from another company looking like all its competitors. Nothing differentiates it and gives it a unique B&O stamp. I've always bought B&O because it is different and nothing has changed, I still look for that.
The Stage and A9 are just going to be overkill in my home so I am happy to say that I have now made my final decision and will go ahead and purchase the BeoSound 2 tomorrow. I appreciate everyone who has contributed to this thread and I am really looking forward to having a fantastic new addition to my home. I'll update the thread with my thoughts after using it for a while.
I will say this, for those who like the Stage and I am sure there are many, well done B&O because the price point is spot on and it seems you get a great deal of tech and quality for that money. Hopefully this will be a big success for the company. I may well get on for the upstairs bedroom in time, we will see. For the moment though a lovely BeoVision 8 classic is doing a perfect job.
Keep safe all.

The Beonic Man: The Stage and A9 are just going to be overkill in my home
The Stage and A9 are just going to be overkill in my home
Remember though, it's not how loud a speak will go, it's also the width of the audio experience. The A9 was superb, from deep lows to good highs. It's not about playing it very loud, just the audio experience for me. Of course, it also went very loud too. But it just sounds awesome.
If I could find a MK3 A9 for £1500 I'd get this over a BeoSound 2 any day.
I'm listening to my BeoSound 2 right now. A remixed electronic track. Sounds very good, but I really miss the A9.
You're making this very hard lol!
The A9 would look awesome in my home as the skinny cover I have seen I really like a lot. Can you give me some more comparison details though regarding sound specifically from both these products? You didn't really say much when I asked some questions in an earlier post, just a one line response.
So for example, you mention the wide spread from the A9. Since I've not heard an A9 for so long I can't remember much about that.
- How would that compare to the 360 sound of the BS2? Just as immersive, more immersive?- Is placement of an A9 more important? Would it need to point in the direction I am listening?- At the same levels, let's say 60 on both, would you hear a significant difference in sound quality alone between the two? If yes, could you please try and describe these difference in more detail?
Trying to gain as much info as I can really about the 'exact' difference in sound or the nature of the differences as others perceive them and hear them.
All useful info, thanks.
The Beonic Man: So for example, you mention the wide spread from the A9. Since I've not heard an A9 for so long I can't remember much about that.
As I said earlier, you need to go and compare. It's impossible for someone to type a response which will leave a definitive decision. The John Lewis at Cribbs Causeway opens w/c 18 May. Can't you wait a week?
All I would say is:
1) If you can pick up a MK3 for around £1500, get one. There's a few around. Far better than the BeoSound 2 at that price.
2) It's not just about how big or loud the sound, it's the definition. The A9 sounds like two speakers. It had a reasonable stereo split. The BeoSound 2 doesn't. You'd need another BeoSound 2 for this.
3) The width of the sound is much better on the A9, irrespective of the volume?
The other issue with the BeoSound 2 is where it's positioned! I put it on the shelf, shelf rattles. I put it on top of a strong oak cupboard, the cupboard vibrates. I've put it on the floor and now it's very easy to hear through the floor. This makes a big difference at even a mediocre volume - as the BeoSound 2 pushes the sound down, it really causes a LOT of vibration, so has to be on a very solid surface.
The A9 doesn't suffer from this quite so much.
Cheers Chris, helpful info, especially re the vibrations. I should be ok as mostly solid positioning in my home.
It's not that I can't wait for John Lewis to open and this is by no means an impulsive purchase as I first saw and heard the BeoSound 2 in 2018. I will head over to the shop next week; it'll be a welcome break during the lockdown.
Of course I would never make a decision based on others views or without seeing or hearing products for myself, but I do enjoy discussion on Beoworld in the lead up to a purchase. That adds to the excitement but that's just what rocks my boat!
As matter of interest, where do you think the best placement for a BeoSound 2 is? I guess I was thinking on the kitchen worktop for starters. If I moved it into the lounge it would sit on a windowsill for the moment. In this regard the A9 would be a better choice as it would fit into a corner quite nicely. The corner currently has no furniture though that is easily remedied I suppose with a table of some sort.
Mikipidia, will certainly drop you a line when I am next over. Likely to be in 2021 I would say now with Covid-19 being what it is. Perhaps you could give me some more of your own thoughts and experiences with differences between the A9 and BeoSound 2 since you always have heard both?
The key thing is, compare the driver units between both speakers.
A9:
1 x 8' woofer2 x 3” midrange 2 x 1½” fullrange 2 x ¾” tweeters * For 3rd generation
versus
BeoSound 2:
1 x ¾" tweeter 2 x 2" mid-range 1 x 5 ¼" woofer
You see the difference? The A9 is a beast and has a far wider sound. If I you like the design, personally don't understand why you'd then go for the BeoSound 2 instead?
I have a question regarding the GVA speakers : do they have their amp always on ? Is only a small amp always connected just to give you a voice answer (like putting a Google Home inside the B&O enclosure), or do the amps switch so quickly that they turn on only when a voice command is understood?
diisign.com
I think the prices I've been quoted for both models are pretty good Stan unless you know anywhere more competitive? Are there any differences in sound quality between the 2 versions? I am not sure if you are suggesting the first version has a better sound?
not exactly true, the mk1 doesn't have gva. The mk2 has a few tweaks here and there and different dsp ''settings'' and can be had either with or without gva. The mk2 sounds slightly different and ''better'' but it's really hard to tell when they're not next to each other.
BeoSound 2 ordered and paid for, along with a BeoPlay P6 as I am curious about this little device also. They are both being dispatched tomorrow and arriving the following day, so I will update this thread with my first impressions with both in due course.
Thanks to all who contributed to this thread so far. It continues to be an enjoyable read and I always find the build up to buying a product just as exciting as receiving it!
Mikipidia, I seem to recall from one of your videos comparing several BeoPlay portables that you weren't that impressed with the P6. I am intrigued to hear it for myself and see if I agree. Do you have a favourite portable speaker from the BeoPlay range? I've had a few A1s and love them. Be interesting to see what more the P6 gives, if anything. I might buy a P2 as well because there's something about the shape and small size that also appeals.
Do we know of any new products coming soon for the Play range?
It's not that I am not impressed with the P6, it's very capable, but at the price point it's not something I would throw in a bag like I would an A1 and in terms or sound aan M3 beats it. It's a bit of a strange portable speaker to me, but that doesn't mean it's bad at all, It's actually very good. It's just a balancing act in the end
my favourites are the A1, M3 (and A9 basically), but it's hard to say with out a price max. I also like a lot of the headphones etc. H4 gen2 is fabulous imho.
''We'' are not supposed to know of coming products lol also the beoplay moniker has been dropped a while ago so now everything is just B&O now.
The Beonic Man: I think the prices I've been quoted for both models are pretty good Stan unless you know anywhere more competitive? Are there any differences in sound quality between the 2 versions? I am not sure if you are suggesting the first version has a better sound?
No, I don't know anywhere with a more competitive price. My closest dealer is now > 300 miles away so I really don't know any dealers at all. My local dealer closed shortly after I purchased my Bs2... actually, it was a store-within-a-store, and the space has been reallocated. Never heard what exactly happened to sour the relationship, but I'd guess some one overplayed their hand.
Enjoy our new purchase.
I have a P2 that I use for travel. I thought the A1 was too heavy... for hotel room listening, the P2 sounds "almost" as good (not really, but it does sound quite good) and is quite a bit smaller and lighter.
Mikipidia:My favourites are the A1, M3 (and A9 basically), but it's hard to say with out a price max. I also like a lot of the headphones etc. H4 gen2 is fabulous imho.
Agree that price is always important when it comes to product value. If I was paying full price I would not have bought the P6 but I was offered it new for just over half the suggested retail price along with my BeoSound 2 purchase that was also heavily discounted. To me this was a deal too good to refuse so I took it even though I don't need any of these products, but then when has B&O ever been about need!
I am an impulsive buyer and a bargain hunter so always buy products when the price represents excellent value for money. I am like that with everything really, whatever the product and brand.
So knowing it cost £170, does that make it more appealing at that price point or would you still have chosen the M3? Ironically I could have had that speaker too for the same price but I chose the P6 just to have something different. I've never been a fan of the look of the M3 or M5; they look like the Balance, S3 and such designs, which are non-industrial, not unique enough for me in design and look similar to many other products on the market.
When I watched your videos on these products several times over I did think there was a marginal difference in sound quality between the P6 and the M3, the latter sounding a bit more fuller or rounded, but it didn't seem like a deal breaker to me. I like that the P6 offers a 360 sound experience (sort of) more than the directional approach from the M3 but I accept that the M3 would have been the better match network/wifi wise for the BeoSound 2 over the P6.
that's a good deal! Like i said in the video, I think it's biggest competitor in terms of true portability is the A1 and in terms of true sound the M3 beats it. Now that you got the deal you have it may be less bad to make it truly portable, as to me true portability gives a probability for scratches and dings which I wouldn't care so much for with an A1. But there is no question about it that it does beat the A1, just turn the bass down a tiny bit and you'll be good too go
Thanks Mikipidia, yes I did feel it was a great deal but it was much more than that actually. The dealer offered me a further discount on the BeoSound 2 than originally agreed and they really didn't have to do that. I was so impressed with that level of customer service that I spent more. Its a funny old world isn't it but what goes around always come around. I will be buying more products soon after lockdown having received such a service. Just received an email from the delivery company saying that the items will arrive tomorrow afternoon so a real sense of excitement looking forward to receiving my new toys and a welcome distraction during lockdown.
I am renting a property for the moment as I was on a worldwide trip that got cut short because of Covid-19. I flew back from Cambodia on Saturday 28 March. My own properties are being rented out and likely to be for the foreseeable future as I have NHS key workers as tenants. Its all good though and quite exciting in some ways being out of my comfort zone. Sadly, I can't see me resuming my travels anytime soon, which is a shame. I would have been flying out to Peru this morning!
When I eventually move back into my main home in Bristol then I will likely change the BV11 for an LG W9 or later equivalent model. I love that tv and again, for the small space of my lounge there would be no better fit. It's just a shame they don't offer it in a 55" model, which would suit best.
Well, I'll report back again tomorrow then with updates on the BeoSound 2 particularly. Will it sound as good as I remember from the showroom 2 years ago and will it still blow my socks off? Let's hope so!
Before you buy the W9, I suggest you hear the sound bar that comes with it since it is quite bulky and doesn't sound great. I had the older version of this TV in my bedroom and while the screen looks awesome on the wall, the sound bar is huge and can't be concealed. IMHO you're better of getting a GX series, putting it on the wall and getting something like a Stage sound bar. It will look almost as slim on the wall AND sound way better.
I ended up replacing the Wallpaper TV with an Ultrashort throw projector from LG that connects to a BS Core/BL 11 and 6000.
Thanks Jaffrey, useful info.
Surprised that the sound bar isn't great and will definitely have a listen before purchase.
I didn't have a problem with the size when I first saw the W7 on release as the main components that drive the panel are part of it, so the size makes sense and I wouldn't have expected it to be much smaller in all honesty. In fact, the wall mounted panel with the sound bar several centimetres underneath I thought made quite the design statement.
When it comes to design I am very fussy and thorough. Not just when buying a product but adjusting my home accordingly to make it work and all tie in. I never have cables exposed for example and walls would be channelled, plastered and repainted every time for a perfect finish. With this in mind I would think carefully about the way I want it to look and explore all options carefully.
At this time I only have a rough idea in my head, but I'd be much clearer when I am ready to go. It's probably a good year away now anyway due to current times. Much can change - will change, and of course there will be new models of sets on the market with perhaps another offering from B&O. Since the wallpaper release from LG though, for me there's really no other option due to space limitations. I need to make as much use of the little space I already have.
Maybe if B&O update the sound bar with a second revision with magical moving parts then I might reconsider, but for the moment it does not appeal from a design perspective.
