Adjusting Tweeter, midrange and woofer on beolab 9s

Hi

I have a pair of beolab 9s which i love...

In our living space they always sound a bit shrill.. ie the tweeter just jumps out at you.

Have played with treble and bass etc.. put down a rug.. (we have lots of glass and wooden floors)...never really fixed the problem.

Ive noticed in the beolab 9 Service Manual there are adjustments that can be made at the rear of the speakers. Presently my speakers are set to:

TW 7

MR 6

WO 5

Is it possible to adjust the midrange or reduce the tweeter without damaging the speakers??

I assume the higher the number the more 'recessed' the sound is? Or is it the other way.

I don't want to touch the settings till i get some advice. Any advice appreciated.

Well because I'm impatient and had some time up my sleeve...... decided to give the adjustments a go...

Speakers are still working!  LOL!

TW changed from 7 to '8'.. assuming that is reducing the tweeter

MR changed from 6 to '3' assuming that has increased the midrange

WO left at 5.

Change in sound appears to have reduced the 'shrill' sound of the tweeter and to our ears the sound is now more balanced with a punchier midrange. 

I'd be interested to know if others have tried this and infact whether I've adjusted the speakers in the correct direction!!!!!!!

Our room is incredibly 'bright' sounding ie no pictures on walls and only a small rug with lots of glass and wooden floors...

I believe I may have now solved the problem of these speakers in our living room!!!

The settings are designed to be set to match the drive units - on the drive unit will be a number and this is the setting the amplifier is set to out of the factory or if the unit is repaired. However your taste in music can clearly be accommodated by using these controls. I would imagine that they were set to have as flat a frequency response as possible but I also find most ALT speakers to be quite forward in the treble area so can understand why you should do this. If they improve the speakers to your ears, go for it! You should not harm the speakers.

Just as what I have thought! The ALT lenses would not suit minimal interiors. 

Are you connecting the Lab9s to a B&O source or?..... 

If you are not try using a automated room correction pre-amp or software. There are quite a bit out there now.

The beolab 9s are connected to a becenter 2 and beovision 8 TV

Turning down the tweeter and turning up the midrange seems to 'balance' the speakers.. CDs that I wouldn't listen to before I can now enjoy  :)

I might continue to play with the settings to get them right for our space..

i just turned down the TW by two notches each speaker when i got them, they may be matched to the drive units but for me they need to match my hearing.

my other half does not even hear a difference but i do.

i think its correct to say that sound is different for everyone and for me they were just to bright, i also noticed when i had the lab 12's that they were to bright but there was notwhere to change that hense i dont have them anymore.

Thanks for the reply.

I assume when you say you turned down the Tweeter you mean for example from 7 to 9 for example. The higher the number the less the 'output'.

Just wanting to check!
