I have a standard definition BV5 with Sky and Freeview (via HDR1) occupying the scart sockets.

I have acquired but not yet connected a further STB to pick-up German TV from the Astra D satellite via another dish. The STB (ROSS brand) comes with yellow/white/red outlet sockets and a scart convertor for these sockets. As I haven't got any spare scarts can I connect this third STB  direct to the RGB socket on the side of the BV5 (design for camcorder or games)?

And, if I do, will the TV automatically sense this source when the STB is turned on and give it priority over the Sky/ Freeview scarts?

I will eventually find out through trial and error once I have set up the extra dish but just wondered whether anyone else has successfully used this connection for another satellite STB. My alternative would be to feed the new satellite signal to another TV altogether.

Main reason for doing this: getting all the Formula 1 broadcasts without subscribing to Sky (which I only use for the free programmes).

The yellow / white / red sockets must be for composite video / left audio / right audio (not RGB) so I'm sure that'll work in that sense; you'll only need a 3x RCA cable (or two stereo audio cables and leave the extra fourth unconneded).

I don't think it'll automatically override anything, though. But neither would it with the SCART adapter, because the control signals wouldn't be there.

Thanks Mika. I think I mistakenly referred to the TV socket as RGB;- it is yellow/white/red for composite video.

I'll probably get the dish set-up this weekend so will report back on whether the TV automatically senses and gives priority to that connection. I have a feeling that it does automatically sense the Wii games console that appears here with relatives every christmas but I'm not certain whether that's an automatic thing if the TV is already tuned to an STB before the Wii is turned on.

Just made a temporary connection to fix the dish position.

As soon as the STB is connected to the Direct Connection/ camcorder socket and is powered up, it overrides the normal TV programmes coming from the Beo4 controlled Sky and Freeview boxes. Switching off the extra box does not seem to automatically restore the normal TV though: it seems to leave the green light on on top of the TV with a blank screen. Switching off the TV with the Beo4 and then selecting Sky or Freeview (via HDR) brings the TV back to normal operation.

All not quite as smooth as I'd like, but it does mean that Formula 1, when not on the BBC, can be watched on RTL (at least until the RTL F1 contract comes up for renewal in 2015.)

Here is a copy of the page from my Beovision5 CD Rom. It explains how to set-up the socket on the side of the BV5.

If you have each socket/scart and your Beo 4 set-up correctly you should be able use the Beo4 to switch to each input without having to turn the TV off first. It took a little tinkering with the setting menu on the TV and adding the correct buttons to my Beo4, but mine all runs smoothly when I switch from input to input.

Just out of interest, I read your description of your set-up and you say you have Sky and Freeview (via HDR1). You also say you have no free sockets on the BV5. My Non HD BV5 has 3 scarts on the back! Does yours have 3 scart sockets and are your Sky, HDR1 and Freeview using one each (rather than the Freeview going into the scart of the HDR1 leaving 1 free)?

Hope this helps a little more!
