I have just inherited a Beomaster 5500 and it appears to be fitted with an external 240V 50Hz grey coloured box marked Model V-8500  with a separate power supply  which I think was plugged into the rear 6 pin DIN sensor connection. Can anyone tell me what this unit is for/is it required?

any help appreciiated

I'm intrigued!

Can you post us a picture of the mystery box please?

Are you sure that it's related to the Beomaster 5500 at all?Could it be a device to control something else.

Often, particularly in Europe, the Din type connectors are found on all sorts of motor and lamp controllers etc.

Nick,

I would really appreciate your thoughts on what the V8500 is?!

The V8500 unit appears to have been plugged in via DIN connector to the Tape2/Aux input

It has also been wired so that its mains lead is shared with the plug from the Beomaster 5500 mains so that it shares a power supply(IMG-3004)

The plot thickens?

It looks like a "home build" device judging by the fittings and the odd hole in the box.

If there are no other connection points other than power to the box,I wonder if it's a Bluetooth rf receiver/adaptor for music downloads.

If you disconnect the power to it,can you unscrew the countersunk fixings shown in the piccie, and remove the top.

A peek inside could reveal all?

Does that white label say “transformer”?

Might it be a loop amplifier for hearing aids with induction coils (“T” setting)?

I have disconnected the unit from the shared power supply to the Beomaster and taken the lid off the V8500 unit as instructed!

My only thought is that I remembered that my father had a remote wireless speaker that I believe may have sent the music signal through the mains (pre-Bluetooth). Is this a possibility?

Good idea Lawrence, and a peek inside the "magic" box will provide confirmation.

It does appear to be a transmitter rather than receiver, but not for direct radiation,as there is no aerial to be seen. The connections to power on the pcb conform with your suggestion of some sort of modulation of the power line Guy?

The hole in the case is to gain access to an adjustment preset,as though perhaps some "tweaking" needed doing sometimes.

Usually, with anything like this, there would be all sorts of notifications on the case to say that the device conforms with certain regulations pertaining to connection to mains. That there are none means it's a home build, praps from a magazine article?

Was your Father a techie?

The matching 'speaker is lost presumeably?

I think that I may have solved the puzzle. After doing a Google search for V8500 speaker the attached image came up. This is what I remember my father having in a separate room to the Beomaster 5500.

So I am thinking that the grey box must be the link transmitter for this remote speaker? Anyway its disconnected now and heading for the bin!

Thank you everyone.
