Sounds like a question that may have been asked before but did not find the answer even though I tried the search (I did have a somewhat similar question around 5 years ago myself, but that was in a slightly different context).

Anyway, I want to connect my Beolab 11 and a pair of Beolab 3 speakers to a Denon AVR. I am wondering if I should do it via:

A) Connecting the Beolab 11 to the sub-out connection in the AVR and the Beolab 3’s to the pre-outs for the front L&R channels?

or

B) Connecting the Beolab 11 to the front L&R pre-outs on the AVR and then connect the Beolab 3’s to the Beolab 11?

If I understand correctly, on option A) I would be able to utilize the AVR for crossing over between the Beolab 11 and the Beolab 3’s. In addition the room EQ on the AVR might work better in this setup? Or am I missing something?

Also, I am struggling to understand which cables I would need for each setup? The AVR has RCA for both pre and sub outputs.

I would go for method (A). I've never been entirely happy with the lack of flexibility offered by B&O subs in terms of adjustment of crossover points and so it would be much better to let the AVR handle this, in my opinion.

In this case, you'll need to set the switch on each of the speakers and the sub to 'LINE' and buy three Phono to PowerLink DIN cables - I'd strongly recommend Sounds Heavenly for these.

I actually tried both methods and much prefer how option A) sounds. And Steve from Sounds Heavenly sorted the cables for me with his superb service.
