I formally posted this in the general section, but thought I might have better results here.  I have a Beocord 5500 cassette deck which seems to function as normal except that no sound is being generated, and the level meter reads full strength with all the lights on all the time.  All mechanical functions seem to work normally so I am assuming this is a problem with the internal electrics?  Any help is appreciated.

There are 2 potentiometers responsible for the level in the preamp section. Off-hand I don't remember their numbers. Put a scope probe  on the input and output of those potis, and that may well be your cause.

Sounds like a missing voltage.
Check the Vref for the VU-meter circuit for a start.
