Hi...I recently acquired a Beogram 4500 with SMMC2 cartridge for 20 USD Smile. The seller mentioned that the record played got stuck one day while playing and he had it disconnected since then.

I opened the player and took out the gears and freed up the sliding chassis. All gears/plastic parts seems to be ok. Followed the instructions in the service manual and haven't been able to get the thing to work. Have seen all kinds of functions depending on how the gears were put -

1. platter spinning continuously since power on but the sliding chassis moving form right to left smoothly but on the way back grinding noise from gears.

2. the camwheel not moving at all..

and many other behaviors...

so looks like the electronics etc are fine but I am not putting the gears properly and the start/stop switches are not getting activated properly.

Can someone guide me in resolving the issue please.

btw - In the below instructions..does "opposite of L" mean "Left/Right/Top/Bottom" of L ?

Thanks !!

Here is an excellent link to repairing BG 4500's. I'm no expert, but you may have the issue with the solenoid piston described. Note this applies to all the last generation tangential turntables.

Thanks Gregg. I am not sure if solenoid piston is the issue. That seems to be working fine.

After lot of trial and error, at the first play press - the pulley completes one complete round but 2nd play requires me to to manually move the gear in position for it to move again.

See video - https://youtu.be/Zmh-BVlBfnk

It cant be so difficult. Am sure am missing some instructions on how to position the gears properly.

Will continue my trial and error method until some guru tells me the correct way of doing it.

Thanks !!

.....

in my opinion there was a reason why the BG4500 was sold for only $ 20!

If the SMMC2 is OK, you've already done a very good deal!

It is very difficult to properly reassemble and adjust the gear mechanism once it has been dismantled.

Unfortunately the link to your video is not ok,

can you see some of the function in the video when START is pressed?

Does the solenoid switch? switch S1 and S2 on the servo board?

here in the forum there are some threads that deal with the Beogram Chassis 59xx, I saw something about Dillen a long time ago \ there, he dealt with the gear mechanics, has to go looking ...

Hi Wilfried..yes the SMMC2 works well..I have a 9500 and tried on that and it's good.

Here is the clickable link - https://youtu.be/Zmh-BVlBfnk

The solenoid seems to be working - switch S1 and S2 activate.

Yes, I may have missed Martin's post. will search for it.

Thanks you for guidance...

I assume, since there is another Beogram of the 59xx series, which is known, that a single or lp is weighed from the platter and thus the touchdown point and the speed is set?!?

You can simulate the weight of a single or LP by gently holding down the pulley, then a gear is pressed down by the pulley and the weight of the gear mechanism is set accordingly.

I watched the video, so far everything looks "normal".

Wilfried, in the video - the first round trip for the pulley is ok. Once it comes back, when I press play again, the solenoid clicks but the gears don't move. I have to move the big gear manually (a bit) for gears to engage again.

I will try your recommendations and report back later today.

Thanks again..

Has the placement of the large board been adjusted correctly?

Fixed !!

So things were working as designed for last 2 days.

Wilfried your suggestion - "You can simulate the weight of a single or LP by gently holding down the pulley, then a gear is pressed down by the pulley and the weight of the gear mechanism is set accordingly." did it.

Thanks Wilfried and Martin. I learnt something new - again and 20 USD well spent Big Smile.

And yes, there is a big difference between a MMC3 and SMMC2 cartridge. Didn't think it would be so obvious.

Now on to the next project on the list -

1. Beocenter 9500 - Tape FWD/REW functions were not working. Order a tape mech and control pcb from ebay. It is from a Beocenter 9000. Here in 2 days, so weekend project.

2. Beocord VX7000 - No playback/fwd/rew..eject works..take up reel wont move...Hitachi idler wheel expected this weekend..not sure if it will fit..

3. Beogram CD50 belt replacement - The challenge - didn't mark the gears before opening Indifferent. Martin has sent the belt..Hopefully will be here in 2 weeks.
