Congratulations, Steve, and well-deserved.

If you're looking for topics, how about a compare/contrast of the BL 4000 v. BL17s?

Also (I think I've asked about this in the past, and may have missed your answer), how should one prepare for a speaker audition at a B&O store, and what should the audition experience ideally be like?  For example: should we expect the dealer to arrange to rapidly switch between speakers A and B?  Should we expect the dealer to compensate for volume differences between speakers A and B?  Or is this something we should manage ourselves?  Or write-off as a hopeless task Laughing   etc.

Honey, we’re not going on holiday for a few years as I bought some 90’s and I didn’t trade in the 50’s either as those are now rear speakers. Please forgive meStick out tongueWhistleBig Smile

Hi Steve

What about a volume control comparison ?

Old/new gear, full analog/full digital...

I think there was a thread on this topic here, may be started by Geoff Martin ?

Thanks guys,

These are some great ideas!  I do like the Beolab 4000/17 comparison, that is planned for as soon as I reach 4000 subscribers.... Whistle

Can anyone find a link to Geoff Martin's thread that CB mentioned please, so that I can check this out?

Kind regards, Steve.

Hi Steve,

A comparison between old and new stuff would be great. Like what does the quality of 6000s nowadays compare to. Is it the m3, m5... pair of lab 8000s sound like the edge? And so on and so forth.

A different topic of interest for me would be Restauration of old‘ish speakers. E.g. I have a set of lab 1‘s which I really would like to keep as long as possible. Do i have to refoam them. Is there anything I can do?

And a last and short one. Whenever I want to listen to music loudly, should I start with lower volumes for the internals of the speaker to warm up, like a car which i want to speed up, Or can I just annoy my neighbors right away?

Thanks a lot and looking forward for the next episodes!

Thanks Robin,

These are some great ideas!  I am planning a few old vs. new speaker tests, plus a video on speaker listening.

I'm not the person to cover repairs or refoaming unfortunately, as this is outside my skill set, I will leave that so one of the repair experts to consider! Geeked

Maybe a video to demonstrate the beauty and the benefits of Beolink NL as it seems unknown to too many users.

Something like how to set it up on various hardware, how to include AirPlay as a Beolinkable source and how to distribute legacy sources such Beograms to modern equipments by a simple physical touch !

BS Moment, BS Core, BG 4002, BC 4500, BS1, BL18, BL19, BL8000 + RCV1, A6, M5, M3, A1, P6 (tks Botty), H5, TR1

Like Robin mentioned, would be very interesting to heard how the old Beolab classics (or even some of the best of Beovox) compare to the newer lineup.

Beoplay A2
Beoplay Earset
Beoplay H6 (Gen 2)
Beoplay S3 (pair)
Beoplay S8
Beovox CX50 (2 pairs)

Beovox RL 6000

Hi BeoFrederic.

The main thing to do, is to listen to music that you know well - don’t jump around to much/skip tracks In playlists.

I would not call it ‘a hopeless task’, but it can only give you an impression of the differences, a guideline to what to choose between.

If you are sincere about buying and the dealer is cincere about selling, I am sure he could arrange a test at your own place or even borrow you the speakers for a couple of days.

The sound of, the behaviour of different speakers definitely depends on the location/the room, where you will have them set up afterwards.

I would not bother much with ‘A to B comparisons’ - there are too many variables in a store setup.

Listen to the speakers (with wellknown material) for a while instead to adapt to the sound of the sets, you choose - don’t try to listen to too many different speakers in one session.

Also consider that it may make a difference how the speakers are connected - to a BV/Soundsystem, an audiosystem, oldschool or modern.

If you can not have the demo at home, drop by a couple of times and do the same test in the shop.

Surround Sound with Beolab's without a BeoVision.

Personally I have a none B&O TV on a low BV7 stand with BL7-2

I would like to add 4x BL3 for surround.

Guess others could be interested in such a solution as well.

But what options are there ? What cables are needed ?

-Almando

-Surround receiver with pre-out

-Other more cost attractive solutions ?

Setup, how-to, cables etc....

Someone on another thread suggested a Canton receiver/decoder without amplifier.  Not cheap, but -- if it works with 5-channel pre-out mixed into its other features -- pretty cute idea for a bunch of powered B&O speakers:

Thanks for that video!  Good recommendations.  I particularly like the idea of an 'anti-magic album' to torture the speakers a bit, and I appreciate that you gave two examples which I will now track down.  I notice that you and MM both don't suggest doing A/B testing in-store.  That's a bit against conventional thinking -- at least, what passed for conventional thinking back in my youth.  I"ll have to think about that.

As regards the hearing test -- I've actually done that  Saw an audiologist a couple of years ago.  Surprise!  I have 'age-related hearing loss' (as we all do past, say, 25 years old).  My hearing is pretty flat until a threshold frequency, then it falls off the cliff.  While it's good data to have, I don't think there's much that I -- or B&O -- can do about it.

Thank you for taking the time to reply!  Some interstitial thoughts/replies below.

Indeed, good advice.  Steve highlights the same - great minds Smile

Here's the rub.  That advice is certainly well-intentioned, but not practicable, at least for me.  My closest dealer is ~ 350 driving miles / 560 km. This is why the intense focus on getting the audition experience right.  Whenever in the post-Covid future that I do get the chance to visit a dealer, I want it to be productive.

@BeoFredric

I see that that can be a big problem.

Maybe you could look for a fellow-beoworlder somewhat in your area, who could let you listen to his speakers....if there are any in your area. I guess there are a few sets of the 4000’s around.

That is also what the forum community is about, I’d say......if covid restrictions allows for it, where you live.

Or maybe you could have the dealer send you a set of speakers for auditioning - e.g. a set of the 17’s can easily be transported.
