What does the DPL (digital power link) do on the Core?

Tried to connect it to my BL90 hoping to do in-app volume control so I wouldn’t have to go out of the Core and into BL90 on the app to do volume control.

Nothing atm, doesnt the core over pl give you volume control? It should.

Thanks Mikipedia. It does. Thought a digital feed to BL90 would be better than converting to analogue in Core, then being converted into digital and then back to analogue in 90. Have you experimented with this with your 50s to see which path is sonically superior?

A little bit, but only with deezer hifi and i must say it’s tough to judge if either is actually better or if you knowing makes any difference. There might be an actual difference with higher end files, but I didn’t try that when i had it. My guess is that the difference is probably very minor if there is a difference at all. Maybe it’s bigger on 90’s, but in my experience the sw in the speakers themselves already “clean up” the sound so much that it’s very hard to tell. Personally I would go for ease of use over all out performance when it’s this close.

Do you hear any difference and what do you play through the core?

The difference between the Deezer Hifi (16/44.1) and CDs is noticeable on most classical music I listen to and indistinguishable 30% of the time. On popular music very difficult to tell. CDs are crisper, clearer, more ambient and more detailed using SPDIF from CD7000 versus Deezer Hifi over Core using Toslink. Not sure why it would be, as both carry 1’s and 0s unless Deezer apply some sneaky compression or mess with the digital file before streaming it. The other explanation is that there is volume level difference between the two paths which my brain interprets as better or a placebo effect on my part.

Well yeah sources are different, but i badically only answered for the question of core pl to core toslinkStick out tongue

Vinyl over bg5500 through bm5000 preamp to rca line in sounds bloody fantastic. Magical in a way i haven’t experienced with digital music. But both sources are different. Can you tell the difference in your favourite record through the core via either pl or toslink? I couldn’t with my limited experience trying, but that’s not to say fully digital may be better. However if the difference is minimal I personally would choose the core over pl for ease of use. So can you hear any difference?

Btw deezer is compressed to an extent obviously, best way to test would always be local file/record/cdSmile

You can actually control the volume in-app while using the Toslink output. For this, you need to go to Product Settings, then Configure, then Sound, then Optical-Out and then select "Volume regulated output".

It works perfectly with my BL20's connected to the Core over Toslink. I guess it should work with the 50's and the 90's as well?

Tried that this evening several times and it doesn’t work sadly. No sound at all. Maybe your BL20 has powerlink cables attached to it.

When I had my 20s it worked perfectly. Also, worked on my 50s when I first set them up, but I was advised with 50s it was best to use the 50s volume regulator so I now have the Core set to a fixed level output through the optical.

Weird. And no, there are no powerlink cables between the BL20 and the Core...

One thought.....I think that if the 50s/90s internal volume control is turned all the way down, then the app control you tried will not work. When I used the app control as you show, I had to have the 50s volume control turned up a bit, if I remember correctly.

Thank you Razlaw. When I turn up the Beolab 90 default volume the volume dial moves on the app playing the Core. If I later switch over to CD via SPDIF, the volume is so high it sounds like an explosion. The default volume is too high for other sources.

I’ve unticked the ‘volume regulated output’ option on Toslink on the Core. I’ve gone back to using an Essence remote. The only other option is to feed the CD and record player into the Core’s input and pass all sources through the Core and then use volume dial in the Core app and do it all in the app.

If you’re playing a CD seems daft to open an app just to change volume. Better to use Essence physical remote.

If you’re playing Deezer in the Core on the app, seems sensible to do volume in the app but seems daft to use the Essence.

You can’t have the best of both worlds.

It is a problem. I am hoping that maybe the Halo will simplify it a bit when using the Core.

Seethroughyou, do you also use a record player? I can’t remember? Because I was going to suggest maybe getting a beomaster 7000 or similar and use the preout of that and that way the beomaster will control the volume of the cd and possibly record player. Just an idea as that’s how i have it here atmSmile
