Hi does anyone know what model of laser the by avant DVD uses as mine has started to play up as it sometimes plays ok then skips or won't read the discs and starts making a clicking sound. I have cleaned the laser but still no better so any ideas on a replacement?

Kind Regards

Mark

Hi Mark! I am having the same issue, I have two avant rf 32 dvd that has problems with their DVD-players. I was quoted about 4000 SEK for a new laser by B&O so I bought another Avant (thats why I have two). I have not yet found a solution either but I think it is possible to buy a new laser and install it yourself.

I think they made a wrong choice on the laser because a lot of avant dvds seems to fail very easily (without much use). There are two or three generations and my avants are both the first real flat version.

Doesnt matter how much I try to clean the laser and I have tried to adjust the laser power on one of them and that just made things worse.

Thanks, I know you can buy replacement lasers for the  beosound 9000 and the beocenter range so why not for the avant or even if I knew what make/model DVD player I could swap lasers. Someone must know what make laser it uses?

Kind Regards

Mark

When you have a fault on the AVANT, the whole unit and controller have to be replaced as a matched set.

So, when a B&O dealer orders a replacement unit, you actually get a replacement kit and you have to send the old unit back unless you want to pay the full unit price.

Different versions of AVANT uses different drives.

Hi Keith,

I am not sure I knew this but I think my retailer told me something like that also. But surely it must be possible to just replace the laser. Like this. I have two identical Avant 32 dvd so I am thinking about taking one apart and try to find a new laser unit that fits. I am quite confident that it will work.

On a side note I think that the Avant has a quite strange DVD-unit. They should have mounted it like the VHS-units (below the screen). That way it would have been much more silent. I do not think the speakers vibration is the problem, perhaps they just wanted to save peoples knees :).

Michael, it’s not that simple. Sure there are laser units on ebay for sale to swap, but only for particular units.

I’ve worked several years for a company specialized in optical laser drives, and for these drives, the controller had to be matched with differrent parameters to work with the laser that was used. I don't want to get to technical here, but bottom line: Just replacing the laser was NOT possible. Reading Keith”s answer, this sounds similar.

I suppose for that price it may be worth a gamble?
