Apple TV had a more refined user experience and higher quality 3rd party apps. Shield if you prefer to game as well since it appears to be a more powerful hardware.
B&O in my life 😊:
Nvidia Shield TV (switched from Apple TV)Happy with it, runs everything incl. KODI etc.; customizable and flexible.
Never tried an Nvidia Shield, but have been very satisfied with my Apple TV 4. Smooth operation, lots of entertainment apps (Pluto TV, Comet TV, Netflix, Amazon, Apple TV, etc.). I've used the mirroring function from my iPad often with success.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.
Swiched almost 2 years ago from Shield to ATV4 and later ATV4K.
ATV looks and runs much smoother, no audio problems (does recoding audio where needed) with my BS3mk3 (2x hdmi).Use the Infuse app for streaming content. Same smooth looks instead of the primitive Kodi (which I also have on the ATV4K but never use).
ATV4K can handle more videoformats then the ATV4.
Shield is based on Android and Open Source, so no decoding from e.g. DTS HD to DTS or other formats, probably due to license fees. ATV4K sends out in PCM 7.1 which my BS3 understands.
For some months ago, ATV4K was among the few that sends out Dolby Atmos.
I have both ATV and Nvidia Sheild Pro.
Agree with everything written about ATV.
Reason for me to use a Sheild:
- It has a Plex server.
- It has better support for the various sound formats using Plex than ATV have when using Plex.
I do not use the gaming part.
I think both have similar picture quality and both provide Atmos support.

I too have both an ATV4k and a Nvidia Shield Pro (2019)
ATV4k pros:
NVidia Shield pros:
Wrapup:
Go with ATV4K if you are an apple product user and if you value user friendliness and polish over absolute technical capabilities.
Go with Nvidia Shield if you value lossless surround audio capability for local media, a better remote and superior technical performance capabilities.
Guys thanks for the great advice for the people using the sheild, howndo you control it with puc, do you use a flirc usb to ir?
I just connected an ATV 4K to a BV7-40 MKIII with very old PUC entries. The apple tv can customize IR commands it receives to ATV actions. I now have Beo4 control of the ATV without updating the PUC
Yes. It works perfectly. I have the profile to upload to the Flirc dongle. I works flawlessly.
I am happy with the shield, the user experience is perfect for me and I wonder what is the ATV as everyone seems happier with it. I may try !
Regarding HDR to SDR conversion for people that still have an Avant, the shield is not processing it well enough and I doubt the ATV will do better. For that I get a Zappiti Mini 4K. Overall it does a fantastic job at streaming movies, whatever video/sound format and the processing of HDRtoSDR is good. Not perfect, but it never will as information is destroyed.

When I used the Flirc with the Shield, I used the Popcornhour Puc table which I already had in my BV9 STB. That worked well. By my knowledge the Shield doesn't do anything with audio, it has only a passthrough option. So your BV or other used panel needs to support your audio formats. Kodi does some de/re-coding to 5.1 DD. As fas as I know it doesn't recode realtime any lossless audio formats to lesser quality formats if you want to use the optical connection. My problem with the Shield was that when you had movies with DD+, TrueHD, DTS HD, my BV9 (with BS3 mk3) when silent or just 2.0. Netflix and Primevideo were only 2.0 on the Shield. The PS3 at that moment and the ATV3 and upwards were all in 5.1 (and 7.1)
I`m using Amayon Fire TV and Fire TV sticks on three of my Beovisions, they simply work - even with whatever PUC through the Flirc dongle.
Standard UI is awful, but thanks to TDUK (Techdoctor.uk) and Wolf launcher all my Fire Tvs got a nice customized ui.
